    Problem w/New A520 ’88 Automatic Omni Axles

    Good Evening, All—

I am working through the (hopefully) final steps of my L-Body A525-to-A520 conversion, and ran across an interesting problem with the Advance Auto/Carquest ’88 Automatic Omni axles I purchased.

Comparing the two ends, on the new axles, the hole for the axle nut cotter pin sits over 1/8” closer to the spline pattern than the original factory axles, both sides. The original axle nut had a thick washer underneath it, but there doesn’t appear to be room for it unless the nut is cut down with the new axles.

Has anyone ever run across this situation before, and if so, what did you do to correct it? I do not want to leave out the axle nut washer if at all possible.

I can e-mail a photo as I cannot attach one here.

    Thanks!
    David

I have not experienced this. You've made sure that you don't have multiple dust shield pieces for the bearings tacked up behind the knuckle right?

I've run into that. I used the original axle nut and reamed the notches on the lock so I could get a cotter pin in there.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I took my original axle nuts to work thismorning and had them milled shorter by 0.160”, the thickness of the washer.

I lost (2) threads from (10), which I considered acceptablebecause the replacement nuts received with the new axles only had (9) to beginwith. (Replacement nuts had deeperthread lead-ins on both sides.)

I had the original nuts cut down because I had a hunch theymay be a little better quality than the replacements; no science there, just aguess.

    Thanks again!

It's probably the wrong axle in the box, these axles for these cars are so close but slightly different depending on year, body, etc. They all get thrown together, rebuilt and thrown in boxes, just bad qc, run into it so much at work with VWs we won't even offer them to the customer. Have them pull a few of the same pn off the shelf and look at them, they all will be different axles
