Suggestions for ’86 L-Body Lower Ball Joint Dust Boot Replacement?

    Good Morning, All--

I know this topic has likely been beaten to death, but I haven't been able tofind a good answer by cruising both forums.

I have an ’86 GLHS, with a split lower ball joint dust boot that insistson leaking grease right against the brake rotor, potentially jeopardizing brakingability.

I saw the Energy Suspension 9.13105G Tie Rod Boot wasrecommended on TurboDodge by a couple forum members and I picked up a set. When they arrived, they are not even close tofitting. The center hole is way toosmall and the large ID doesn’t look to promising either.

Has anyone got any better ideas? Does anyone happen to have the P/N of theoriginal dust boot?

    Thanks in advance!

    David

Replacement ball joints come with a new boot. If you don't need the ball joint, order the least expensive one and use the supplied boot.

I had thought of that, but I kinda figured the bootsincluded with the el-cheapo $30 balljoints may be utter garbage. But I have wasted $60 on stupider things...

Rockauto has ball joints as cheap as $6.

Another thing to consider is buying new, good brand ball joints and replacing the 30 year old ones. You're going to have to take it all apart to change the boot, cut the brass tac weld and pressing out the old ones only takes a couple more minutes. Most part stores will rent a ball joint tool for a few bucks.

That’s a good point, and I do have entire K-frame alreadyout of the car. However, the car has alittle less than 12K original miles so new ball joints aren’t really necessaryat this point. I will probably have togo your original suggested route and buy a sacrificial set of ball joints torob the boots. Just seemed wasteful.

Asked in an earlier question, the diameter of the ball joint“pin” measures 0.705”.

    Thanks!

A thing to keep in mind is that the grease has potentially turned to soap after all those years.

What GLHS number is this? (I own 313 so just nosy)
