    89 Lancer Front Lighting

I'm going to relay the headlamps in my Lancer. What bulbs should I go with? Would a conversion to an H4 bulb, etc. benefit me? Does anyone know if Hella still makes the front fog lamps? One of mine was cracked beyond belief while on the Alcan last year.

I converted my '87 SL to E-code housings and H4/H1 bulbs. Big improvement over the sealed beams!

That's the direction I was leaning. I want something that is nice and bright for the low beams, but nothing that'll blind people. I live where it's very dark and I drive through the country a lot so I want some bright high beams. I need to get the fog lights figured out though. I think I'll measure them to see the size and try to match them up based off of that.

I'd really like to see how you go about putting the 4-headlight setup on relays. I'd really like to do that to my SL.

easy, 3 relays. 2 for the H4 setup and another activated off the H1's.

Not only is increasing the wattage/voltage to the lights important, but getting the beam pattern as well. The Hella E-codes in either a glass reflector pattern (E1) or the clear lense reflector pattern (E4) or even Cibies really put the light where you need it and not in the eyes of on-coming drivers. Just the 2 E4 Hella's in my Daytona with Relays would throw more light on the ground than HID Beemer's and Acura's back in the mid 2000's. I had them paired with Hella 300 driving lights that were purposely put on the wrong side of the car to throw light at the apexes of corners. Unfortunately you can't get the 300's anymore Me and a lot of Lambo owners are sad about that.

Thanks for that info. I think I'll do the H4 lights on the outside with the H1s on the inside. I think that should put out way more light than stock with the new housings. What wattage do you run in yours? I upped the wattage in my Shadow and it was nice, but certainly didn't blind other drivers. I attribute a lot of that to the yellowed stock plastic housings. It seems like you can never get them truly clear. I'm still searching around for a suitable replacement fog lamp.

    Re: 89 Lancer Front Lighting

I ran the stock wattage bulbs that came with the lights. No real need to up the wattage with the increased voltage from the relays. All increasing the wattage really does is make the bulbs burn out faster. I tried 100w bulbs in the Hella 550 drivers I had years ago and they'd last about 2 months. The 55w's weren't that much less light and they'd last forever.

Excellent. I think I'll pick up some of the Hella conversions off of Amazon, but I still have to figure out the fog lights.

I was going to see if Hella 450's fit, but off the top of my head I think they might be a bit on the big side.

    Re: 89 Lancer Front Lighting

I'll measure them up tomorrow night. I ordered up the conversion lights off of Amazon, and I'm now hunting for relays, terminals, and sockets. I would love a system that's weatherproof, but I can't seem to find one with dual 87 terminals.

    Re: 89 Lancer Front Lighting

These came in my original kit of the 550 hella's

    http://www.rallylights.com/hella-hl8...d-bracket.html

So it's always what I've ended up running and just t-ing in an extra wire right to the terminal plug via solder etc. Running them straight up and down in the engine bay kept moisture a non-issue tucked up on the fender next to the a/c drier above the purge filter. With them being clear I can see if they have any moisture inside. Now I used some in my old GLHT and mounted them pointed slightly up above the hood release latch. Even though there was never any water in the car they would somehow collect moisture and rust inside. My next setup for my SL will probably just use these mounted in the engine bay above the purge stuff again.

    Re: 89 Lancer Front Lighting

I was thinking pretty hard about those. Although, if I go with a standard one terminal 87 relay, I'll probably do these- https://smile.amazon.com/HELLA-00779...S8CFGXWQA4TVK7

If you look at the "frequently bought together" suggestion, you can see the nice plug with pigtail for them.

The fog lights are roughly 3" by 5". I don't think these will be easy to replace.

I believe the Shelby Lancers had different fog lights. I want to say they were the Marchal fogs. Perhaps the same as the ones on the Daytonas?

The 87 Shelby Lancer had Marchal lights. The bracket just bolts to the bumper reinforcement.

Honestly I'll probably remove them for better intercooler flow anyways.
