I think they put them in all of the super base cars for some time. I *think* I saw one in an 88 or 89 once upon a time in a yard. Out of curiosity, why are you looking for one?

    From Mini Mopar.

    Thanks

I don't believe all L body cars got the 3.05. I could have seen an anomaly or two, but I know for sure I've seen them with other FDs in the carb cars.

Re: what 525 came with 3.05 final drive ?

I wouldn't argue either way as I just posted the M/M quote, 1986 Omni brochure lists it with carb, non H.O.

Anyone remember the 520's that had a 3:05 tag and weren't really 3:05?

I forget who built them but it wasn't N.P and they calculated the F.D ratio differently.

    Thanks

I think somebody is building a hyper-miler car...

My Scamp originally had a 3.05 FD A-460 in it. Was ok, but man did performance improve when I installed the 3.56FD 525 in it.

I believe the standard trans was the 3.05 FD, but there were other ratios available as an option. For example, in 83, my Scamp was available with 3.05, 3.56, and 3.86 FD 5 speeds. Production was pretty evenly split(about 700ea) between the 3.05 & 3.86, and only 150 were built with the 3.56. All GT's got the 3.56 5 speed if a manual trans was chosen. But there was also two different 4 speeds, and two 3 speed autos available as well. So there were 7 trans choices in 83...

i run small tires and drive on the highway alot, mostly above 70-80 and the car tops out too quick for how much power it has, i was going to go for the 3.50, but i alredy have an 88 555 and i dont think the 3.50 will be enough for what i want.

You should be turning about 3000 rpm at 75 with the 555 trans(assuming similar sized tires to mine).

The 3.05 FD will definitely help with that.

For comparison, my Scamp with 195/50/15 tires, turns about 2800 rpm at 75 mph with the 3.56 FD trans. Multiplying out the ratios, with the 3.05 FD, you should be turning about 2400 rpm at the same speed.

So you will drop about 600 rpm from your current configuration going with the 3.05 FD. BUT, you need to understand the 525 is a lot weaker trans than the 555, so you will need to be careful how hard you beat on it... Also, you will need new CV shafts, because the 525 is a small spline diff...

Re: what 525 came with 3.05 final drive ?

the 305 gear will get to about 90-95 mph at the top end of third gear

third gear in these transmissions is pretty good for building speed quickly

    - I ran one with the old style log turbo motor in a turismo and got 46 miles per imperial gallon

strngth of old used transmissions is relitave to the weakest part

555's aren't much stronger than a 525 .. when you snap off one of the bolts that holds a shift fork onto the internal shifting rods

the little bit of steel gets between the gears , it don't matter much what trans you have

my old rebuilt 525 lasted forever .. my used 555 that broke that screw , about 6 months before the screw broke

when using used transmissions there is only one thing for sure .. it might or might not work for long

I got an A525 with the 3.05 gear out of an '84 base model 2.2L Charger in the junkyard once. I put it in my '86 GLH Turbo, along with an '89 2.5L TI engine, big Isuzu NPR intercooler, 3" exhaust, and a Garrett TII turbo. I *really* liked the gearing and it seemed to suit the low end torque/light car combo very well. It was amazing how fast it would leap to 30 MPH in 1st gear and hit nearly 100 MPH before shifting to 4th gear. Launching was a lot easier too without roasting the tires every time. I delivered pizza in the car for a long time and it was really fun.

Is this for an L body? I wouldn't want to run a 525 behind anything performance related in a heavier car. You're not trying to make a hybrid out of it are you? Have you thought about a custom 5th gear?

i want to make a hybrid using the 88 555 as a base, i read the hybrid threads and it shouldn't be much weaker than a regular 555 if done correctly right? i wouldn't even try to run a 525, it would be going in a 2dr shadow with about 200-250 hp, im running short 205 45 16 tires purely for the visual looks and don't plan on running a taller tire only wider

With 7000rpm redline, A555 with a 3.5FD, and 205/50R15, my GLH trapped at 110mph in third gear and probably had a few MPH left before hitting the fuel cut.

I was afraid of that. The bolt pattern of the 525 ring gear is different from that of the later transmissions. As a result you'll have to have a couple more holes drilled. You can eek by with reusing 4 of them if I'm not mistaken. The steel is very, very hard and will cost a lot to have drilled and tapped unless you have the wherewithal to do it yourself. I looked into this a few years back and deemed it cost prohibitive for my project.

yea i read that, but figured it couldn't cost that much, how much should i expect to pay to have it drilled ? this is kinda a forever project so im really not concerned with haveing it done right away even if i just get the parts and put it off till later

$400-$500 buck is what I was quoted from two different places. One guy was impressed with the hardness of the steel.

ah ok i was thinking 300 tops, might still be worth it if i can find the parts 525 really cheap, im still definitely still considering it since this is the one thing i don't like about driving long distances in these cars

years later i now have the 3.05 525, now just need to find someone to do the work on it, cant even remember what All needed to be done to make it happen except the machine work to the gears cordes mentioned

That’s it. Just make a hybrid after the machining and you are good.

Re: what 525 came with 3.05 final drive ?

i remember at one point there was a thread with pictures on this, do you happen to remember or have a link to that? im not seeing anything on my searches, im not much of a transmission guy myself and at most ive only had the diff cover off, to make a hybrid would be swaping the gears and mainshaft from the 525 over to the 555 and redrill the 555 diff to accept the 3.05 ring gear? im just wanting to make sure im understanding everything
