    Cam damage-is it still usable?

I bought a set of used aftermarket cams off the internet and the exhaust cam has me a bit concerned. As is the usual I contacted the seller and he is unwilling to stand behind his product.

Here is the deal. Its a bit hard to explain so bear with me. The exhaust cam has fairly severe pitting on about 1/4 of the circumference of the cam on the same plain consistent with it laying in 1/4" deep of corrosive liquid for a period if time. There is a clear line of demarcation on the pitting so it was definitely laying in something. The pitting has affected the lobes and the journals alike.

The problem is one particular cam journal has enough material rotted away that polishing it has resulted in a low spot about for 1/4 of the circumference that is .001" deep at its lowest point of that journal. Even at that point the pitting is not nearly eliminated but I think it is smooth enough to be useable. I wouldn't be so concerned except the low spot will be the portion of the journal that is seeing the most "load" when the valves are open on the most adjacent lobes.

    What do you think?
    1. Use it as is.
    2. Scrap it and lesson learned buying internet used.
    3. Can it be repaired (reground).

    I didn't use Paypal. (I know-again lesson learned) I don't know that I have much financial recourse.

Biggest mistake was probably removing material. I would ONLY be worried about high lift areas of a cam lobe or high spots on a journal.

for the same reason as that you don't acid dip spindles , I'd worry that the hardness of the cam is / has been affected

If it has roller rocker arms you should have a better chance.
