98 3.8 voyager, need advices

I'm looking for a Voyager,
Seller told me by phone that sometimes the trans doesn't shif to 3 or 4.
He then stops the engine and after trans shif good.
What does that mean ? Is the trans dead ?

BTW what should I check before buying this car ?

First thought is the trans controller has detected an issue. Power cycling it removes it from the active code list. I would check codes with a scan tool that reads transmission codes...

I once had a '91 Voyager that did the same thing. Never found out why. Eventually I put a 543 in it...
