One of the benefits of ditching the distributor pickup for the main engine position sensor is you get extremely precise timing control vs using a distributor based pickup. with a distributor based setup you have the stretch of the timing belt, gear lash from the intermediate shaft and oil pump all affecting overall crank position accuracy before the sensor even sends a signal to the ecu. there is a reason the TIII engines used a crank position sensor off the ring gear teeth vs having the primary engine position sensor run off the cam.
