near the bottom of the diff,on the front side there is round protrusion, maybe 1" diameter with an approx 1/2"diameter depression on the inside. This it the hole you drill and tap with 3/8 NPT. Remember that since a NPT is a tapered thread, stop an check a few times with your NPT plug. This way it will have proper thread engagement. If you need a picture, LMK

If you're going to do this on an assembled transmission, the tap will bottom out on the differential and not cut the threads deep enough. I cut my tap down a little so the widest part fully engages the case. This way your plug will seal better.
Also beware that when you drill out the case, most of the fluid will leak out.
the tranny was just rebuilt,no fluid in it.I drilled a 3/8 hole through the case and then used a 3/8 npt tap in the outer hole and a 3/8 plug.
I did mine in the car and used a 3/8 plug. worked fine.
