yeah , I know the coating you refer to
I had a new spectra tank for g-k so I've seen it -thanks for the heads up on that

sounds like the best option for me is sand blasting the old o-e tank - before I open anything up

Some have like a cheap galvanizing and some tanks have been painted but look like not.
And there could be some stamping lubricant also fouling the surface.
One thing is for sure, any aftermarket tank is made pretty damn cheap.

As far as quality of tanks, I have not had to replace a Chrysler tank, but my experience wit Spectra Premium has been very favorable, they are Canadian made and seem to be pretty sturdy. I actually have a Spectra Premium oil pan on my new 460 Ford engine, it was a Ford Racing part ordered from Summit Racing as a "Fox body rear sump kit" for engine swaps, it is a late F series factory pan, pickup and dipstick tube and stick with a pan gasket, so was exactly what I needed and every bit as solid as the older one I took off.

my spectra tank was prob 20 years old still in the box but seemed thick enough but yes their coating did seem kinda strange ..almost wax-ie to the touch

an old trick for painting galvanized eavestroughing was to spray and wash them using rattle can engine degreaser as it neutralizes the zinc in the galvanizing
    - though welding on gal is still nasty and toxic

i wonder how different later plastic van tanks differ from oldschool metal tanks. if it would be a viable swap.

you would have to mod them for a return but that isnt hard.

i have a rotted out 2000 neon sitting there thats going to go to the JY but first im going to pull the tank before it goes just in case.
