    Coil

I read somewhere that we should not use the MSD coils but only a stock coil. My Daytona has all MSD ignition parts except a nasty looking stock coil, but there was an MSD in a box. I also have a couple of Accel coils they I've bought to use in my other cars. Years ago I had an Accel in my Aries and then one day it stopped running and the garage said the coil was bad because I installed it backwards. Anyone have any knowledge on this issue. Should I just use stock types or are the Hi-po coils OK to use?

Is the stock coil not working?

    Re: Coil

The one in there works, just looking ugly so I was gonna buy another MSD to clean it up and match the red wires. Then I read that we should stick with a stock type, so I'm just wondering what I should do. Same with the Accel coils, I bought to install in other TMs but wonder if there is a reason not to. Especially since I had a possible issue with an Accel coil years ago that may or may not have been installed wrong by me.

    Re: Coil

If you want to save some $ and go with a coil that you know works just clean up your old one and paint it red. I've done this quite a few times over the years and it works great. I use regular Duplicolor or VHT engine enamel.

    Re: Coil

From what I know, there's 2 different MSD coils, for use with and without a resistor.

AND if you use a MSD coil, they can NOT be laid down like a stock coil.

    Re: Coil

So I guess we need one that has a resistor. What about Accel. I have 2 of them, any problems with them?

    Re: Coil

had an accel coil for a while on my old shadow in the stock location. Didn't run over 15 psi so I don't know if it can handle much more. The best setup is to convert to the E core coil from the later cars. I made a lead to connect to the factory wires and extends the wires over to the water outlet for the newer coil. The newer coil is a better design

    Re: Coil

In my experience, the MSD replacement stuff kinda sucks. The OE Chrysler coils work better, even at 30 years old. I used one of the later thermostat mounted coils with no issues at crazy cylinder pressures.

Ok, so the MSD is a waste of $. Any advise on Accel? I have a couple of brand new ones and I could paint one red to look like an MSD. Or just ebay them?

If you're going to paint something, might as well paint the stock coil.

    Re: Coil

You can use a Accel 8140M coil. It has the same internal resistance of 1.4 ohms just like the stock coil. Car started a little faster and had a little more pep than the 25 old original coil.

I'm definitely kicking myself for not doing this earlier. You can either extend the wires from where they are, or pull them back through the split loom so they exit on the other side of the engine bay, then cut all of the excess away.

    Re: Coil

The E coil isn't round like an old school coil, it looks more modern and it's located very close to the distributor on a bracket that I believe bolts to the valve cover. I had a 93 Shadow that had one. Go to your favorite parts web site and search for a 93 4 cyl coil.

    Re: Coil

accell super stack works fine and has the correct resistance

chrome or yellow they are the same

super stack looks like the o-e canister coil , not one of those big stupid super coils that were popular in the 70's and 80's

there is also a mallory epoxy pack style coil for trucks that is supposed to be a very good coil but I don't know off hand if the resistance on that one is correct or if it would require the ballast resistor to be added

    Re: Coil

The swap to the later coil requires the bracket that mounts in front of the thermostat housing, a second captive-nut mounting bolt like the one the dipstick tube
mounts on and the electrical connector that plugs in to the bottom of the coil - all from the donor car.

Agree on the t-stat mounted coil. I've been running one since 1997@ 24 PSI with no issues.

    Tidy's up the Engine nicely.

    Thanks
