    odometer gone mad

I drove my 87 Shelby Z from home to the LA auto show this weekend, it's about 60 miles according to gps. The odometer really hasn't ever worked since I have owned this car, which doesn't really bother me. I looked down shortly after starting my drive to see the odometer working, but at a fantastic pace, the miles were adding up much faster than normal. The car counted over 300 miles on a 60 mile drive. Crossing a fwy bridge which is a few hundred feet long added up to 3-4 tenths of a mile. Speedometer was reading normal. The odometer turned fast regardless of speed, and only stopped when the car stopped.

Now I am not concerned about it that much, but more curious as to what would cause this? And it stopped working when I left to drive home.

    Thanks

Are those a cable driven speedo? I'd think it would almost have to be an electric speedometer with that type of behavior.

I remember my grandparents bought a brand new Omni in 87. About 6 months later, the odometer just started racking up miles sitting in the garage. Dealer replaced it under warranty. The thing racked up about 10K miles while sitting in the garage. Never did get an explanation why...

87 l-body is cable driven mechanical.

If the car isn't moving the odometer isn't going.

Sounds like it is tying to make up for the lost miles.

Sounds like it's time to inspect the SDS and the wiring to it. IIRC the SDS should have continuity between the pins 8 times per revolution.

Maybe you drove through a time warp? Did you feel older? Your beard grow faster?

I'll add that a faulty SDS or wiring from the SDS to the computer is easily discovered by engaging cruise control if the car is equipped with it. If the car attempts to chase the speedometer, it's the SDS or wiring to the computer.

cruise works fine, speedometer works fine. Wouldn't the speedometer be erratic too if the SDS or wiring to was bad? I have had other turbo mopars were the SDS was bad and the speedometer would go on and off erratically and set code. The odometer stopped working on the drive home but the speedmeter and cruise still worked fine. no faults.

Well, it's 100% in the actual odometer itself then.

    Re: odometer gone mad

accellerated odometer function is often the first sign of an oncoming Christine like possesion

this can be avoided by parking the vehicle on sacred ground with the hood doors and trunk open for 24 hours to alow the evil sprits time to escape

the only real difficulty will come when searching for the impound lot your car got towed to after someone called about the striped and looted car in the church parking lot ...
