Thread: No forward gears or reverse...What Happen?

No forward gears or reverse...What Happen?

    87 Lancer, 525 manual.

I launched the car hard last night, power shifted second went to power shift third and oops 1st again. After that i went to 3rd...nothing, 2nd...nothing. I had no movement on all gears, even reverse. When I did put it in gear a could hear things moving in the trans but the car itself didn't move. I looked under the car and didn't see any fluid on the ground. The car would roll just fine. Didn't hear any crunching or grinding when it was in gear and coasting. Clutch pedal pressure felt different...it felt soft. The clutch also was starting to slip before this happened.

Any thoughts on what might of happened? Maybe the center section of the clutch let loose? Input shaft broke? Ring and pinion teeth are gone? (Thought you would think there would be some nasty sounds coming from that)

Reading that, my first instinct was the clutch hub. But I'd imagine you'd at least hear something if that was the case.

Could you have broken the splined section off of one inboard CV and the differential is just spinning now?

Does the speedometer read? This could rule out axles if you don;t have a speedo reading.

No, but that's because my speedo cable is messed up...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

1987 is normally a 520, typo or swap??

Following all safety procedures let it idle in gear and see if the intermediate shaft is turning.

I have seen a few with stripped teeth, that's assuming you have equal length axles!!

    Thanks
    Randy.

I'm pretty sure its a 525 cause it has the stamped steel diff cover. It came in the car that way when I bought it. Was not excited to see it wasn't the 520.

Yes it does have equal length shafts and a blown out intermediate shaft bearing so it has to be replaced anyways.

You probably already know this but if it is a stripped int shaft an unequal (long) axle from a 1986 Daytona will replace it.

    Thanks
    Randy

Think I found the answer, that's clutch material coming out of the timing window...lol.

I'm glad it wasn't something worse. Now the fun part of dropping the trans.
