Interesting. I thought the bolt pattern was different for all of them so you couldn't mix them up between forward and backwards driven pulleys.

Yeah, I ran into this issue when I had the '89 2.5L TI/big intercooler setup in my old Omni GLH Turbo. The bottom end was from an '89 Caravan and the top end was '89 TII from an 8v Maserati TC.

Flowkooler has a 2.2/2.5 pump now, kinda pricey but they seem to do good things on v-8's. Anyone try it?

    Looks interesting.
Wonder how well it prevents cavitation at 7000rpm...

Bumping this again... I feel like I should know this, but do the 89 and later pumps rotate the opposite direction? Maybe I've had cooling problems with my 89 CSX because I have the wrong pump? I was just looking at those FlowKooler pumps mentioned, and they do look nice (and I note they are listed for 90 and up).

    Rotates opposite compare to what?

What year engine does your 89 CSX have? If 89, did you not buy a 89 waterpump?

90 and up waterpump have a larger bolt pattern than a 89 pump. You'd need a matching pulley if you want to use that 90 pump in your 89 engine.

89 I assume. I don't think I've ever replaced it since I bought the car. With the belt on the top side of the smooth pulley, wouldn't it rotate counter-clockwise instead of clockwise?

That's right. As noted, they went to larger dia bolt pattern in 90. The 89 pumps are a one year deal with the small bolt pattern, but reverse rotation compared to the early units.

I bet it has the wrong pump. This thing has always tended to run hot.

So are they taking a stock (parts store junk replacement) pump and putting a new impeller on it ?

Can't remember what aftermarket company, but someone was making a waterpump for our cars with an upgraded bearing.

    I have no idea
    - saw it mentioned a couple of posts before so I looked it up

there was no link posted , just a mention of ..so I brought one back with me

I had a chuckle reading how they tighten the clearance to the housing and thought of my previous post about replacement pumps often need the impellers trimmed so you can simply bolt it together
    - they worked fine if I did
but the first one didn't even turn - before I noticed the problem/issue

Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !

my water pump question would be what happened to all the CSR electric water pump group buy pumps ??

I haven't seen boo of any of those since the thread where they went out and someone posted words to the effect
"the electric , reverse rotation is great but for the drive direction would loosen the thread on the impeller / pump shaft "

so ... what happened? I don't think I've seen a post anywhere on one being used..YET

nobody have a punch or chisel ??...grow some hair .. you know where... SMACK $350 pump with hammer ...stake thread, solve problem and use it (?)

The problem was bigger than that. Although that was a problem with earlier ones from the group but apparently.
But if you look you will find the pump was listed as early 2.2/2.5 and it was actually the common block reverse rotation pump cartridge
What they did not do however is angle the pump impeller blades in the correct direction!
I brought it to their attention (as possibly others did earlier) but they would not fix the design.

I still have hopes to someday either have something similar made as a group but, or put together some components to install a universal electric water pump. We would just need a block fitting/adapter and a bracket to accomplish the alternator mounting.

I used my CSR pump for about a year, but mostly dragracing only as I was afraid to drive much on the street because of the failure stories.

Even though the blades were pitched in the wrong direction, the pump still would flow and circulate adequate to cool. But it wasn't very efficient having the impeller cut the wrong way.

Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !

    LOL,
    OK
from the past few posts I'd stop and think , I need a common block pump anywho .. so buy flowkooler pump

measure impeller diameter , check back side clearance and measure shaft diameter

then consider just using it .....or hacking it to bits ..

the csr pump in my china cabinet looks nice but I wouldn't miss seeing so much of it

as for making them , we all know a couple of guys here capable of making the backing plates if given motivation ...

moroso seemed to have a pretty good hour/life rating for the pump motor I had in mind for my 460

    240 000 hours (?)

though most electric / electronic consumer goods are "good for 3 years"

just waste a bunch of flower coolers for their impellers ??

... should only cost 6-7 hundred bucks ...sigh ..

Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !

I installed a Flowkooler earlier this year. Not many miles on it so I can’t comment on if it cools any better. Went together without issue. Hoping the cost coupled with the reputation of the brand means it’s a better quality than parts store. I forget if I checked to see if a Mopar pump was still available, but I’m guessing not.
