    SMEC Repair

My 86 Daytona has been rewired for a SMEC, 89 Turbo ll. Last month the voltage regulator part failed and a external voltage regulator mod was done. Saturday I wanted to go for a drive. The car was hard to start, the engine was cutting out (coil driver circuit would drop out), tach would drop to zero, radiator fan would monetary come on, and the power loss light would flicker after code 55 was displayed.
At first I thought it was a bad ground, power connection, or something shorting out. After checking all that and coming up with nothing. I swapped in a 89 Turbo l 2.5 auto transmission SMEC that I got from a pick n pull JY. With that SMEC the car ran fine. So my question is there anybody that can repair these SMEC? I would like to keep the stock tune. Thanks, Marc.

me, I'd just look for a known good one - if you can't get a remanufactured one anymore and take the "I hope it's fixed" factor out

These modules are not difficult to service - the hardest part is digging the potting out and re-sealing them.
Most of their parts are common regulators and drivers.. e.g. 7805, 7812...
I'll dig up the blue prints and wiring schematics to the controllers to help.

Well I have nothing to lose, my plan is to open the bad SMEC up, clean away the potting and order every transistor, capacitor, and what ever else I can replace. Wish me luck.

    Re: SMEC Repair

The very first thing you should try, if you haven't already, is to take the SMEC that will run the car. Pull out the power board (the one with the 14 way connector) and swap it into the SMEC that is giving you trouble, and see what that does. That should at least narrow which part of the SMEC needs work.

I had no idea that you could separate the two boards easily. I will most definitely give that a try Barry. Thanks

    Re: SMEC Repair

Well it was the power board. I was always under the impression that the two boards were electrically and potted together as one. I was just able to plug 14 pin plug into the known good SMEC and left the 60 pin connector in the bad SMEC. The car started and idle without any issues. I then swap over the power board and went for a drive. I always wondered why both the 14 and 60 pin connectors had their own power and grounds.
The car seems to run fine with it. Thanks a million Barry!
But I do have a few questions:
Can I just use the turbo l power board with a turbo ll logic board?
Can a power board from a non turbo SMEC work with a turbo ll logic board for a spare?
Honestly I rather get some good power boards than try to rebuild the bad one and carry it with me like we do with HEP and ASD.

SMEC: Single Module Engine Controller 2 boards, 1 case

SBEC: Single Board Engine Controller 1 board, 1 case

    Thanks

There is no logical reason to call an Engine a motor.

All Turbo SMEC power boards are the same.

A power board from a non-turbo SMEC should not be used in a turbo application.

I have located a few prints.
Any suggestions how to capture a full size blue print - the images I captured are not legible.

My daughter is an interior designer, she uses a professional print company to create a file. Usually she asks for a pdf.
She mentioned to me most printers have 36x48 inch scanners available and charge "a couple bucks" per page
