Great, now my DD PT GT is sick!

    https://youtu.be/yfDNICzhqWw

Noticed twice in the last week a weird sputter at WOT but thought was just bad gas.
Filled up yesterday and this morning when started the car sounded like a Subaru boxer engine and could smell unburnt fuel.
Plugs have been in a while, so i got new autolite iridiums and changed them. They were definitely old, all were dry. New plugs didn't fix the problem. Checked each wire and they were all pretty close about 635 ohms.

I'm on the original timing belt still, but it is on a short list when i get time.
Specs: 05 PT GT auto, 87000 miles.
    No check engine light.
    No pending faults.

    Any suggestions?
    Wayne H.

Only has one 4-way coil pack.
I did get a replacement while i bought plugs today, but did not try it.
I think you might have to remove the upper intake to access it on the PT.

Not thrilled about this, since i didn't really have much time to even try and get the van ready for Cecil, and the wife needs to use it while I'll be away.

The coil pack outputs are fired 2 at a time. So the boxer engine sound (which I have experienced on a 2.0) sounds like you're losing half of the coil. If replacing the coil doesn't fix it, check the 3-pin connector going to it. If the car runs at all, your +12V feed is good. The other two pins are your PCM controlling each half of the coil pack.

If I had to put my money on it, I bet it's the coil. With the heat from the exhaust right below the coil, it's common for these to get cooked over time. That's why you see these for sale:

If the SRT-4's suffered from it, I bet the PT engine bay makes it even worse.

Re: Great, now my DD PT GT is sick!

I tried using TorqeLite to read some sensor info, and since i haven't really modified this beyond a stage 1 computer and a custom exhaust i haven't messed with it much.
I don't know if the protocols are correct for it, but it seems to work for engine temp, timing advance, and some other stuff.
I did notice the intake manifold pressure is reading a positive number at idle. Like 5.4 psi, the boost gauge in Torque was reading vacuum though.
I figured i would try a new map sensor, but there isn't one in stock and would have to order.

Does anyone have the sensor info as far as voltage schedule for the pressure range?
I've got a mityvac and a multimeter so i could drive it and read voltage, if i knew what it should be.

    And the winner is...

jonnymopar & Rob, with the bad coil answer.

Kind of a pain i didn't get the correct intake gasket, so i put back together with the previous gaskets.
Who has the best replacement ones?
Replaced pcv valve while i was there since there was some residual oil in the intake. And found a broken vacuum/boost line (but test ran before reconnected it to be sure it was not the problem).

Test drove and seems good. Will take to work in a few minutes.
This is a carquest BWD coil, so i might find a new mopar one in case this doesn't last. I should have this car a while yet...

Glad you found the issue and it was a relatively simple one!
If the intake manifold has to come out again, and your PT has the aluminum intake, I remember reading that swapping for the plastic one is a performance upgrade. Something to look into.
If you do not have a catch can on it, I would add one. That would take care of the oil collecting in your intake. My SRT-4 would suck a good amount of oil in the intake manifold and then it would ooze down into the intercooler and collect there. Catch can fixed that.

Thanks Mike. I knew the difference in intakes when i looked for this pt gt, so i found a late 05 model (the best year performance minded) with the plastic intake.

I need to look into a catch can, but there isn't much real estate under the hood of a pt.
When i bought it i intended to do much more mods to it, but later decided to keep it mild for longevity.
