    Oil dipstick length

Is there any difference in the length of the oil dipstick or tube between a T1 and T2 common block 2.2?

The reason I ask us because I put 4.5 quart s of oil in and it still reads beliw the add mark. This is an 89 2.2 common block with 2.2 T1 dipstick and tube.

    Re: Oil dipstick length

Both T1 and T2 common block would have been equipped with balance shafts/deeper oil pan so they should both have had the longer T-handle dipstick with the black cap underneath the T-handle sealing the top of the tube. A 2.2 T1 would have never been equipped with balance shafts/deeper oil pan so it should have a shorter dipstick. The dipstick tube is the same for everything 8v 87 and later IIRC. The deeper oil pan with a shorter dipstick its going to read wrong.

    No.

    2.2 N/A FWD - No balance shaft.
    2.5 N/A FWD - Yes balance shaft.
    2.5 N/A RWD - No balance shaft.

    2.5 T1 - Yes balance shaft.
2.2 TII - No balance shaft.
2.2 TIII - Yes balance shaft.
2.2 TIV - Yes balance shaft. (89 Shelby TIV - No Balance shaft until someone tell me otherwise)

I use an oversize oil filter and I always needed 5 qt to get to the full mark.

OK I may have a bigger problem on my hands. Did I use the correct pan / pickup combo?

    Nope.

That's a non balance shaft oil pickup with a balance shaft oil pan.

If you have no balance shaft installed, using the balance shaft oil pan require 7+ qt of oil. I don't know if any addition issues will show up using that oil pickup.

No balance shafts. I have a baffled pan though with swing doors.

If I am reading the 89 FSM correctly: 2.5L = silver cap under T handle. 2.2L - black cap under T handle.

    Re: Oil dipstick length

The dipstick with the black cap is the longer '2.5' dipstick aka balance shaft oil pan correct dipstick. The silver capped dipstick is the shorter one for shallower oil pans.

Based upon the pictures you shared you need the longer dipstick to match your setup. The part number stamped on the blade should be 4483102

    Re: Oil dipstick length

Thanks guys. You are right. The black capped dipstick for the 2.5 is longer. About 3/4 inch. I found both and measured.

either will work if you know how much oil you just poured into the motor and have a hacksaw to mark the level on the dip stick

you then also have something to compare to other dipsticks as you hunt thecorrect one for the application

    Re: Oil dipstick length

Ok this is what I found...see if it makes sense. I measured the depth of each pan. The 2.5 CB balance shaft pan pan is only a 1/4" deeper then the 2.2 CB non balance shaft pan. I also filled the 2.5 pan with 7 quarts of water and the 2.2 pan with 4 quarts. The water in the 2.5 pan was a 1/4 " higher from the bottom than the 2.2 pan. So that 7 quart fill that should offset the pan depth difference assuming the pickup tubes are supposed to be the same distance from the bottom of the pan.

    Re: Oil dipstick length

I would be concerned with how close the pickup is to the bottom of the pan.

I always use the matching pickup and pan, even when removing the B.S. assembly.

Might not be an issue but certainly something to ponder.

Have you posted any pics of your baffles??

    We like baffles!!

    Thanks

I agree with this. The non-balance shaft pickup might be sitting too far above the baffles for the baffles to be effective.

I haven't measured the difference in the pickup depth directly, but my estimate is the non balance pickup is 1/4" higher. If that is true, it shouldn't affect much I would think. After 500 miles I will need to change the breakin oil anyway. I will put the 2.5 pickup on and find out exactly. I should be OK until then.
