    Driveline Whine

Discovered some driveline whine in my 1992 Daytona IROC R/T after a spirited weekend of driving at the track with tons of 30+ PSI pulls. Any time I put the car under load I can hear the whining. The volume increases as the speed increases. The car has a built 523 with an OBX. I welded the bearing race to the shaft as recommended by Jackson. Im not sure whats going on here. I took a video the other night and I hope that will help diagnose, any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is the noise noticeable at highway speed?

No, at highway speed above 60, I can not hear anything over road noise. When I discovered the whine I had to drive it over 2 hours back home on the highway, no problems on that trip.

    Re: Driveline Whine

I am thinking bearing noise in the trans. Had a pinion bearing do a similar thing. After a while it got louder but didn't increase like a wheel bearing does.
    Which bearing.......???? Diff bearing?

checked trans fluid level yet ?

might simply have reached a new low level after some sporty driving

Anyone ever had to reshim an OBX posi? I replaced the differential bearings and properly re-set the preload while I had it apart.

Definitely sounds like gear whine. What fluid are you running?

The fluid was darker than I would expect with only 5k on the rebuild

Been done for years with no issues, if trans is right.

Pull the shifter housing and take a look around ?

The other option being take the end cover off and unload the guts, remove the axles and use the miller tool 4995 to see how loose the differential is if you dont find anything super obvious without going that far. The first time I drove my car after putting in the 568 I was taken back by how noisy they are from the very course gear set, even the chunkier 3.77 gearsets run virtually silent in comparison. That is some nasty noise going on there

    Re: Driveline Whine

My 568/523 hybrid makes a little noise in the higher gears, most noticeable in 5th. Sounded like diff whine. I e-mailed Cliff (who built it) about it when I first started driving it and he said unless it got worse, don't worry about it. Sure enough it took 4 years of abuse and never got worse, so I'm assuming it normal gear noise from the OBX unit.

Yours was getting worse, so probably best to check it out, but just wanted to give my experience, and let you know there may always be some small gear whine in it if you have a OBX/Quaiffe unit.

    Re: Driveline Whine

There was a super faint sound after rebuild if the radio was down and at one specific speed, but this is bad now. I am pretty sure that I check diff preload with the transmission fully assembled, I will just need to pull the axles and use a long extension. I could be reading the directions wrong though.

Having the ring gear in mesh with the pinion gear and all the drag from everything will give a very false high reading.

    Re: Driveline Whine

Drained the fluid this week, there was no metal in it, fluid looked ok. Added 2.5 quarts of Fresh 5W-30. Whine is still there. Curious if I were to drive the car a few days if I would damage the transmission. Need to take my DD BMW off the road for some repairs before winter and I still need a car to drive, no time right now to tear down the transmission, really hoping to make it a winter project.

    Re: Driveline Whine

I put off looking at my tranny when it was making a noise I was unsure about...I regret it. Chewed up shaft, messed up bearing...now I have to go and replace all the bearings and seals again due to all the metal crap that's made its way through the poor thing.

Take a weekend, pull the guts out of the side and just look. Yank the axles so you can turn the diff by hand and feel it, too...see if it is "gritty" as it rotates or has a noticeable amount of slop.

It could seriously save you a LOT more headache and money down the road.

    Re: Driveline Whine

Pulled the transmission apart this past weekend. There was no pre-load on the diff bearings at all. I pulled the diff race and added 3 shims that I had. I was getting different reading on the required torque to turn the diff depending on clockwise or counter-clockwise. I set it to what I thought was right. I put it all back together and took it for a drive, whine is still there but it is less. Need to get some more shims. I have the original set along with 9 more. With the diff bearing installed in the flange, it is slightly sticking out of the bore, is this normal? How many shims did others need to add their diff to get the proper turning torque? Anyone have some extra shims, I need more?

    Re: Driveline Whine

You should probably look to see if the diff is centered in the carrier. Sounds like it's "lopsided".

    Re: Driveline Whine

How could the differential get lopsided in the carrier, its sitting flush on both tapered roller bearings? My hypothesis is that either the diff bearings were not pressed completely onto the center section, or one diff bearings were not pressed completely into the housings. My thought now is there is not enough pre-load on the diff, the diff should move towards the passenger side, this would change the contact location between the ring and pinion gear, it think it is contacting too much and the gear mesh is not ideal, which is causing the whine. I could be wrong though.
