    Idle Problem

I have had something that has stumped me On my Van and now on a car that I helped work on , I get it running good drives perfect multiple times, and then I load it up and trailer it to a track a few hours away and then it doesn't want to idle by itself, unless i give it gas it will just die after a few seconds. Any Ideas on what is going on?

The car is a sand rail so doesn't have a check engine light, I can check codes terms when I get. The scan tool to it, but it is just so weird it works great until transported to a different altitude / location

DO you have the barometric pressure solenoid hooked up?

This is something that I am wondering about the connector is pretty rough, I will have to double check it is. Working

    Re: Idle Problem

Ok so it acts fine then acts like someone reached over and turned off the key, just shuts off, not die down, even when keeping the RPMs up it will turn off, drop a bunch of rpm then kick back on then repeat.

Anyone know of a sensor or something that would cause this temporary cutout

Do you have a tach hooked up to it? Do you lose rpm signal when it quits? Sounds to me like you are losing ignition, maybe a bad HEP? or wiring to/from the HEP??? What shape is the shutter wheel in under the HEP in the distributor? Make sure it's not loose...

Good idea I will check on this thanks, I thought if HEP, but I didn't check the distributor

    Re: Idle Problem

I have had a bad MAP sensor cause an engine to fire when cranking, but die when you release the key back to run...

Also worth noting, MAP sensors seem more prone to failing when hot. Once they cool down they will often start working again for a while...

Map, HEP, ignition switch, Baro solenoid, connectors of all sorts. Pretty good list there.

if it's in a sand rail I'd suspect it gets bounced around a bit. I'd look at the HEP & wiring coming off it.

This is my fear, it has solid metal motor mounts so it vibrates a ton in addition to the off road conditions, I am meeting with the owner again on Monday and will go through these good ideas and let you know what happens

    Vehicle speed sensor?
I had a similar problem with my GLH, I thought it was the AIS, but it turned out to be the speed sensor.

This vehicle a sandrail doesn't have one anymore so it dies often when coming to a stop ,

I did find the problem one of the wires providing 12v ignition to the ecu had a bad connection so normally it would connect and start but under the vibrations of it running caused it to temporarily lose contact and shut down, sucked to have to drive 2 hours to fix it but i was glad it was a simple fix.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions this is why i love this forum, i started trying some of them and kept the list with me until i found this problem.
