    Power steering rack removal

    Hi All,

I am in the process of rebuilding the entire front end of my 1984 glh.
I am stuck on removing the roll pin on the steering shaft connection to the power steering pump.
Is there an better way to drive it out? From above or below?
Any tips you can give me would be appreciated .

i am working under the car and plan on dropping the entire k-member.

    Thanks for any tips.

    Alan

saw a couple other posts, seems like I just need to suck it up and drive the pin out.

I find it easier to remove the steering column first. The shaft slides out. Once the rack is out of the car removing and reinstalling the roll pin is much easier.

This is by far the best way to do it.

+1. Column comes out much easier than it looks.

It's been a while, but for some reason I remember struggling on the L-bodies removing the roll pin too, and seem to recall pulling the steering column first wasn't an option (maybe because the L body had a collapsible steering wheel instead of a collapsible steering column, there wasn't a slide joint?).

But the last time I did that to an L-body was probably around 2006, so I could be remembering wrong.

You are correct, the shaft is solid and doesn't slide apart. My apology.

With that said, it may be easier to remove the upper shaft roll pin and removing the steering column first rather than fight with the lower roll pin.

    All,

I removed the upper roll pin and dropped the whole K-frame assembly down. No need to remove the roll pin at the steering box.
Now I can remove and replace the steering rack on a workbench. Thanks to all who commented. I am sure I will have fun putting the roll pin back when it is time......

I chamfer then smooth the leading edge of the pin enough so I can just set it in there with fingers and have it stay in place without holding it, then drive away. Easy
