    Oil consumption

I have a 1990 caravan that has been going through about 1 quart of oil every 500-700 miles with lots of blue smoke, it does not seem to be temperature sensitive and will do it on both a hot or cold motor. I have performed and leak down test and that seems to be fine, the plugs don't show signs of burning oil either but the problem seems to be getting worse fast.

    Turbo or N/A or V6?

Without knowing more, I'd say valve stem seals.

its a turbo with a fairly recent turbo thinking that it would not fix the problem but wanting to switch to a garrett

Does the cloud seem to be bigger after idling for 30-60 at an intersection, then accelerating? In my experience, that's a dead giveaway for valve seals.

    Re: Oil consumption

if the plugs are clean, i'd guess the turbo hot side /turbine/ is leaking oil into the down pipe..

with the engine running & warm, remove the oil fill cap if its puffing.. time for rings

yes the cloud seems bigger after idling at an intersection, and the turbo was changed with one that was good when removed and it did not fix the issue

My money is on valve seals then, easy to replace without major issue.

Yup, probably valve stem seals. Possibly a dropped/worn guide or two.

    Re: Oil consumption

I've got a fairly fresh motor(like 3 K mile-ish) that is dropping and exhaust valve guide, it's below the level of the aluminum casting of the head so the seal is just riding up and down on the valve doing nothing. Since it's an exhaust valve it just goes strait out the port/Ex Mani/turbo/ exhaust and never shows up on the plug. Using a quart every tank of fuel so it's pretty smokey. Head has to come off

    Re: Oil consumption

If there is smoke at initial cold start up then it's most likely not the turbo. Turbo doesn't get hot enough to turn oil into smoke when the engine is cold. I would agree with Tryingbe that it's valve seals or guides.

    Re: Oil consumption

If you have a turbo that can turn smoke into oil you need to patent that quick
