    Re: 1987 csx #418

Yay finally feel like I got 'some' progress made. Now I will admit I completely forgot about the airbox... Yet it still all fits right in there. Thanks to work for the powdercoating and press-brake. Still need to add a brace to the backside but first I'll need to get a new booster and MC to see exactly where things fall. Going to mount a buss bar on the inner fender to power the relays and fuses from the battery.

The shorter booster and MC stick out roughly 12 inches from the firewall. Everything will be snug but should fit without being stupidly crammed in there.

With the double booster it puts the MC clear out over the transmission mount bracket. The single diaphragm booster is shorter (but slightly larger in diameter) so it is the choice here otherwise the master cylinder and fuse box mounting bracketry would be interfering with each other. If you go to the store or online there are usually two booster options listed for any given K based car. I have the same combination of MC size and the shorter booster on the Shadow. It does make for a firm pedal that some would probably not like but it is fine for me.

    Brake booster came in.

So is there any consensus on master cylinder size and which one is less likely to be crap right out of the box ?

Short of finding old stock they will all be chinese anymore and most likely cast iron anyways.

Got the radiator and intercooler out. Calling camp springs radiator tomorrow and see how much its going to hurt this time.

Good news that the airbox is not broken like I thought it was.

new brake booster is painted up and sitting at work drying.

Injector harness came out in pieces the aftermarket fuel rail (2 piece) will be up for sale to anyone who wants to come and get it.

Old brake booster removed. Cleaned out and repainted that area. Removed the wipers, cowl cover, wiper motor, 10lbs of leaves and pine needles from the cowl area. Chipped and dug out the seam sealer in the drivers side corner of the cowl, maybe tackle the passenger side tomorrow if the weather allows it.

The drivers side of the cowl also has this plastic plug that is bolted in and sealed with butyl tape. That plug (most likely) along with the cracked and failed seam sealer is what led to the massive damage on the floor pans. The hole that plug fills in will be getting welded up.
    .
Dashboard and pedals also came out. While the pedals are out I am going to look into developing an alternative to the original plastic clutch adjuster and supporting the clutch pedal with solid oilite bushings.

This project has really shown the limits of the current air compressor so assuming one is instock next weekend I'll be going to Harbor Freight and picking up the 60 gallon compressor.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

The culprit corner that led to half the floor being rotten

Passenger side is not as bad but the floor has still got some holes.

Drivers door hinges were beyond loose so tonight I removed the fender and took care of things. Hinges came from another car I bought for parts in 2010, That P body has lived on in atleast 8 different cars now including a few numbered cars. The inner fender area was packed full of leaves and debris, all the seam sealer will have to be dug out, some surface rust dealt with and resealed.

    .
In the bottom of the doors and the fenders there is this thick (sound deadener?) coating, looks oem and its mostly flaking off. Its all getting removed as it is promoting rust. insides of the doors were full of debris but otherwise clean and not rusting. The hem flange is not bulging so I know the rust worm has not set in yet.

The time is coming to make the decisions on where this rebuild goes. While I intend to respect the 'originality' aspect of things to some degree there will be some obvious and not so obvious changes. In removing all the lower plastic cladding as i have been working on things I really like the minimalist less cluttered look without it being there. I have always thought the stick on cladding on any car just looks like crap, especially after a few years when it starts to settle and sag from the sun/heat working on it. I would install riv-nuts and some low profile screws to fill in the holes but keep it reversible.

Got the passenger side cowl corner scraped and chipped out. more rust hiding underneath the cracked sealer than i was hoping for, no new holes but lots of deep pitting. if the weather allows for it I'll be pulling the fender to assess things and finish cleaning all the packed in leaves and debris out.

Short evening tonight. Got the gfx removed on the passenger side, as not unexpected I would find eventually the rocker panel has a rot spot just forward of the rear wheel well. Feeling around I felt the sound deadener bag the factory drops in there so I know its open on the inside, atleast makes things easier to wax inject after replacing the metal.

This build was moving at the pace of molasses due to several constraints. I had to make the plunge to get things going, an air compressor upgrade was a long time coming. This was finally my excuse to get one.

Started on the top engine harness. Had to purchase more injector connectors and boots, funny how once you need something its never to be found

Allied Electronics can go !***$%^$ themselves. A week later and nothing is here, called those sorryass bums and they cant even provide a tracking number. Because I chose the 'economy shipping' option at a mere $15 instead of the $30 'standard' for couple of parts that would fit into a padded envelope and didnt even cost $25. mouser I placed an order on tuesday morning and received it thursday... Standard ups ground from them is $8. Found a pair of NOS headlight trim buckets on ebay earlier and promptly bought them.

Air compressor will be here tomorrow. Coworker gave me 40 ft of 6 gauge UF cable to hook it up.

sort of unrelated but I got the conduit for the compressor power and air hose layed in and fitted out. Waiting on the weather to cooperate so I can bring the compressor home and get it hooked up.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

Allied electronics decided to send my order finally. unbelievable how much runaround they can put out and finally admit 'we dont quite know what happend to your order"

Onward and forward the compressor is wired in and I added an hour meter and sight glass to the oil reservoir. So awesome to finally flip the switch and hear it come to life. Still need to plumb in the system but just for comparison I set up a temporary hose and ran the air saw and little flap wheel grinder, WOW

Dug out the spare two piece intake for laying out the top engine harness. May clean out a spot in the shed and toss a block and head on the stand for doing full scale mockup and layout. I'd love to have the front end of a junked car chopped off and on casters for doing full engine bay mockup. Someday maybe...
