The rust bucket, 1987 csx #418

The car has made it home and after the B-van has been fully taken care of the CSX will be started on. First order of business will be a tractor supply paint job on the hood and roof to halt the deterioration and getting the front fenders removed and cowl area thoroughly cleaned out and rust control measures taken.

A gallon of satin black tractor/implement paint applied with a roller, its intended as a stop gap until a proper repaint can be performed as the car will be living outside now.

Paint and paint supplies picked up today. Also looked into the trunk latch and why the release cable is not working. From the moisture that has eaten up the front d-side floor pan it also seized up the pull mechanism, its soaking right now but I'm not holding out that its going to be usable again. The lock cylinder for the trunk is also jacked up somehow, neither key even goes in more than half way.

And let the spending begin! New denso alternator and lots of other nickel and dime parts ordered. Priced a new lock cylinder set from autozone since they were actually a better price than online.

Did you get it from your brother Dan? Now I'm wondering if it is my old 87 I traded to Dan.

No. Your old car went to Joe Bernardo on Long Island IIRC. Lost track of it after that.

By Pat standards this will stay very mild. As it sits right now it is not at all 'driver friendly' and that's going to change. This weekend I'll be pulling the transmission end cover to inspect the pinion shaft/bearing and reseal it and if its showing signs of failure then its getting a 3.77 523.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

new trunk lock cylinder and door lock cylinders picked up. new trunk lock cylinder was/is totally wrong and looking at the 94 and the online pictures of the new replacement ones there all wrong so I took the guts from the new cylinder and put them into the old cylinder and we have a working lock again. need to pickup some duct seal/dumdum and the pot metal thing that holds the lock cylinder in place I'll take to work and lightly sandblast it and repaint it. In removing the taillight I see someone in the past had water leaking problems and glued that sucker on with RTV.

Trunk lock cylinder mount casting cleaned up ok. Found some gasket sheet at work and made a new gasket to sit behind it. Pulled the starter out to remake the positive battery cable.

Cable, lugs and other stuff ordered to remake the positive and negative battery cables. Front engine harness and starter sub-harnesses are both a disaster. Other than the two HEP rubber booted connectors everything else is going in the trash and being replaced with 100% new everything.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

I came into this with an open mind knowing and expecting that as part of reviving a car almost 30 years old that most of the moving mechanicals are reaching the end of their service life or have already done so.
Adding to the list of replacement parts.
Drivers side axle looks original, its got the clamped on weight in the center and the citroen style housings. Both boots are split open.
someone already dumped the intermediate shaft setup and put in a long axle on the passenger side. That said I'll replace both sides to keep things as a matchet set.
starter is covered in about an inch of sludge but it still kicks over, local mennonite shop that does starters/alternators will be giving it the once over.
Got the air plumbing removed, slight amount of end play felt in the turbocharger. Pulling the head and putting in a roller camshaft along with getting it refreshed was already in the schedule but that confirms it. After doing a cometic and studs in the 94 I will be doing the same for this one.

Back on the electrical side of things.. in one form or another I will be coming up with a solution to the crunchy brittle wire problem that the SMEC and power module connections have.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

Found a decently clean 87 service manual finally. Delcity order came in, still waiting on remy battery to even provide a shipping confirmation. I found this car has a 'different' alternator tensioning then my 94, does not have that rubber/steel tear drop shaped thing that likes to crack and fall apart, bonus there as I was already intending to buy one from Polybushings, still have to get a new clutch cable clip and grommet anyways though. Frank was telling me this car has an appetite for eating clutch cables and I noticed the clutch pedal has got a ton of preload on it and consequently its sticking almost 2 inches past the brake pedal. between the clutch arm on the transmission and the cable length something is not right and that will be addressed also.

And for pure sacriledge I picked out the best looking cast TBI valve cover I have in the spares collection and started soaking it in paint stripper to refinish it. A one piece gasket VC will always rein over that multipiece BS anyday.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

Frank I found the water leak... Did some exploring with a screw driver and hammer, ouch. Pretty safe to say most of the drivers front floor pan from the pedals to the seat is not there anymore.

Also found the broadcast sheet stuck to the floor pan behind the drivers seat. I'll take some pictures before scraping it off, mostly unreadable and falling apart when touched.

    Re: 1987 csx #418

The sheet metal brace that holds the front end of the seat tracks will need to be removed to properly cut out and replace all the rotten metal. Found out the spot weld cutters I have are the same ones that my rotobroach kit at work has in it, save me from buying more of those again. Borrowed an air saw from work also to try out and if it works out get my own. In removing the drivers seat I found the seat track is not broken but just missing a bolt.
