have to start 3 times to get glhs to run

so new engine, trans all wiring, injectors, fuel pump etc. no codes...was running fine but has started this deal

starts and dies immediately and restarts three times to keep running. Have to give it gas to keep it running and then its fine after that

    Ideas?

I would check the AIS. That's almost certainly the problem.

Is it possible that the base idle needs set?

Rhymes with Tortoise you might be on to something. I had to swap a used one in to get it to start when I dropped it in.

Well bad AIS or a wiring issue, don't count that out either.

I verified integrity of every wire on the car when I had it apart but that is a good thought. Do they sell just the plug and terminals? I would love to just put on a new plug and new ais.

I believe they're listed in the big connectors thread in the EFI/electrical section.

There are plenty of places that have them. I get the replacement ones from Rockauto.com if I can't find them on ebay or amazon for cheap.

Re: have to start 3 times to get glhs to run

you say you've already swaped in another ais when you started (?)

my TII turbo z conversion had an ais issue once
it was with a full TII harness so it wasn't the TII conversion

granted I was getting a code for the ais but replacing it with a new one didn't solve the issue
    - I'd even gone back to the dealer to check they had in fact given me the correct ais

so , when I got back , simple deducrion .. what else is near the ais and might just be related to the issue?

tps is pretty close - so I swaped it for one from my other car and everything worked just fine

then I swaped back in the old ais and the original issue with it came back up

the car only ever threw the code for the ais but it took both a new ais and another tps to get it working properly

I still don't really know why I only ever got the ais code and nothing for the tps

Re: have to start 3 times to get glhs to run

both the ais and tps are of unknown origin. the first ais just kept raising the idle in increments 250 rpm up to 4000 rpm thats when I decided to swap it out. The car has no codes so I need to check the sweep on the tps to see if there are any jumps in the sweep.

    Thanks for the tip

Re: have to start 3 times to get glhs to run

I think I had a similar issue a while back. I ended up blocking off the AIS port inside the TB until I could figure it out. RPMs went to idle all the time, but it eliminated that issue. About 6 months ago I got the speed sensor working again and turns out THAT allowed the AIS to start adjusting idle properly, so it seems. Something to consider.
