How safe is 1340 degree EGTs at the end of a qtr mile...stock pistons?

So, after running tiny road racing slicks (20x6x13 Goodyears or lately 20.5x7x13 Hoosiers) since 1990 or earlier, I decided that Im tired of changing tires. The first test and tune at Indy a few Weds ago I tried my M/T SS tires that I use to drive it there and back. I was pleasantly shocked that the ETs were about the same and the mph was up slightly! The EGT guage (big digital one with memory) showed a bit over 1400 degrees! The following Sunday was our first pts race and I jetted up the secondary...the larger diameter and heavier tires were needing more fuel for sure. The temps were a bit lower, high 1300s...and ETs were not as consistant as normal, no traction troubles. So the next Saturday I richen up second barrel one more jet...EGTs in the 1370 range and still a bit inconsistant, but better. Sunday comes and I jet it up one more time and hoped for the best...EGTS were 1340s on test and eliminations. Still leaner than I usually run (1290-1300) BUT super consistant...in a 20 degree air swing the car was only .015 difference from quickest to slowest. SOOO, to make a long story short....is 1340 too lean for a few seconds in the qtr mile on stock pistons?

Is the EGT probe before or after the turbo?

Non turbo, maybe 98 hp 2.5 switched to my intake and carb...exhaust. The probe is in the correct location just a bit away from the head. Im just worried that 1340 might be too hot...hopelfully not. LOVE the new found consistancy since I bracket race it everywhere! You will see Matchbox a SDAC26!

On N/A engine the exhaust components are rated for steady state operation at 1450F

    1340F is fat.

Reliant pounds through the traps at 1600-1700F

GREAT...just what I needed to know. For some reason I thought 1400 was too lean, so no need to do anything then...nice and safe.

I wonder what times and speeds you are getting. A friend and I are restoring his rampage and we are putting a 2.5 in it. Our plans are head work, run the stock carb, comp cams 280 and custom headers.
The only substitute for cubic inches is cubic dollars, how fast can you afford to go?

Re: How safe is 1340 degree EGTs at the end of a qtr mile...stock pistons?

When I had the first tall block put in the Matchbox and drove it untested to Topeka, everytime I was hitting 60 mph the EGTs were going into the dangerous zone. I stoped every ten miles until I thought I had it perfect and once more at the track. First time on the track in 4.5 years and won that SDAC event, that was combined with the SRT Dodge Natls...and their gamblers race. To keep the EGTs in the safe zone I ended up using a secondary jet on the primary side. The motor was a bone stock tall block, stock head and cam, but with my 84 intake and stock header put on. If I remember correctly I was using a 404 as a primary and a 417 secondary....while using smallish 20.5x7x13 Hoosier road race slicks. That motor had terrible wristpin problems and eventually was replaced with a common block 2.5...which actually liked a 404 and 404 combo. This year I decided I have had enough of changing tires before and after the race...using now MT S 205x50x14 tires that are larger in diameter and heavier...again the car was leaner than I wanted, so as of now I am running a bit too rich 424 primary and 417 secondary...next race out I will change back to the 404 and 417 combo...I think weak batteries in my big digital EGT gauge was causing too high temps. Last race before SDAC26 I was running high 1300s, changed those batteries and at Memphis temps were in the mid 1200s. I would suggest running at least 404 and 404. Keep in mind also that my carb is a non feedback Weber 32 36 and has no powervalve. This might all make a difference. When I replaced the Holley with the weber I changed the holley jets to the weber and the EGTs were identical to what they had been.
