    86 Turbo Z transmission

So I am looking at buying a slightly modified 86 turbo Z.
The car has had the T1 converted to the T2 blow thru, with T3 rods and pistons, has +20's, and fwd performance ecu. My question is, how weak is the 525? I know they're junk compared to 555's and 568's, but I'd like to race it ever so often but I'm not sure how it will hold up to that combo. If it breaks, how hard is it to swap in a A555 or 520? I'm really wanting to get back into the turbo Mopars and this little car is slick.

It won't last long. If you install a chrome moly end plate, and diff girdle, it will give you a little time. It's made worse by the fact it's in the heavier G body. You might stand a slight chance in an L-body, but I wouldn't bet money on it...

If I were you, I'd start looking for an A-520 now, and buy an OBX limited slip diff for it... You will also need 87+ axles, because the inner spline of the 520/555 is larger than the 525.

Either trans will bolt to the engine. You should replace the clutch anyway while you have it apart, so you can get the correct one for the trans you are running. You'll also need the correct axles.

It's been a while since I did the swap so I don't remember, but you may also need the shifter and cables to go with the A520/555.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was wondering if the shifter and cables were different. I know in the L body cars they have linkage.

Technically, by the Chrysler parts manual, they are different. Can they be made to work? Not sure, but the shift quadrant on top of the trans is very similar between the 525 and 520/555. I'm sure the cable mounting bracket is different due to the different diff design.

The 525, 520 and 555 all use the same shift selector assembly. The 523 and 568 use a different selector.
If you convert to a 520 or 555, you will need the correct shifter and cables, or you will need a conversion set to use the 525 rod linkage.
If you choose a 523 or 568, you need that shifter and cables. The 523 and 568 won't work with the L body rod linkage.

If the 525 in the car is an 87 or later, it has the same stronger gears from the 520.

Little bit confused. Are you talking about an L body or the Turbo Z? What I'm not sure of is if on a Turbo Z, if you have to swap out shifter and cables if you upgrade the 525 to a 520 or 555.

Yes, the shifter and cables are different between the 525 and the 520/555.
