    axle repair

took a look at my passenger side axle today since it didn't quite "feel" right. took the boot off and one of the bearings had completely come apart. what do you call that piece with the 3 bearings on it and can it be purchased separately, or do i need to get a whole new axle (it's out of an 89 omni - equal length axles in the SC)?

Is the cup (the other half of the C/V joint) damaged? If not, you can get the part that is broken. I think I might have one.

I believe it's called a tripod. You could probably swap it from any other FWD mopar that used that style of inner joint.

the cup looks okay, no obvious "destruction" or wear, but i'm not sure i would know what to look for. what is the part number for the tripod? any trick to installing it?

Well that snapring there is the only thing holding it on. The wear you'd be looking for on the other side is basically little divots or dugout areas. It may be fine but there's also a good possibility a donor axle would have the exact same inner piece to reuse anyway.

Sadly I no longer have it. I must have tossed it since nobody wanted it. Sorry.

The stupid pliers for the cv boot clamps are probably pretty cheap. If i had the clearance i would way rather just use big worm gear clamps.

    Re: axle repair

The piece that holds the rollers is called a spider, from what I found looking for parts to repair mine. I would think they are interchangeable, but maybe not. Obviously the size of the inboard will make a difference, but that looks like what happened to mine....twice. :-|

Welding and cutting works till you melt the boot too far through
