Over revved engine, now breaking rockers

Did a 2-3-2 shift this morning and it instantly started misfiring. Pulled the valve cover off to find #3 exhaust rocker snapped in half, and #3 intake rocker out. I put a spare pair of rockers in and it drove fine for a little while, I shut it off and it sat for about 4 hours. When I restarted it the engine ran great for about 30 seconds then started missfiring. Pulled valve cover again to ring #3 exhaust valve stuck open and rocker out. Popped valve closed with a screwdriver and reinstalled rocker, it lasted another 30 seconds then snapped the rocker again.

Cylinder head coming off Saturday but any guesses as to what happened?

could have slightly bent a valve, not enough to misfire but enough to stick in the guide? when you over rev an engine the rods can stretch causing valve damage on an otherwise non interference engine? I have also seen pistons hit the head from over revving too... just a guess though, bummer dude...

you have dropped a valve guide. had the same thing happen on a 2.2 when i let my gf drive it, she was afraid to use 4th or 5th ( dont ask me why) when driving in the snow and she drove the damn thing all the way home in 3rd gear. a valve guide had dropped causing the valve to bind and thus a broken rocker on that valve. the fact that you said the valve was stuck open pretty much confirms it.

Well it seems that the valve took the brunt of the damage. There us some scoring in the guide but it's usable. I think the bronze guides prevented the guide from shattering.

No impact marks. Looks like the bend is completely above the guide. I think when it floated and the rocker came off, it jammed between the cam then bent the valve.

Yeah, i guess i see that now that you mention it. First time i looked at it i didn't apply that level of logic to it... whoops.
