    Tie rod problems... 89 LeBaron

Hey guys, i was swapping some brake parts over from my 88 lebaron to my 89 today, and I noticed on the drivers side on my 89, that the tie rod had some in-and-out play, somewhere under the bellow-style boot (not on the tie rod end, closer to the steering box). I'm guessing that is a problem with my inner tie rod end?

How do I get the boot off? I took the little clip off the front of it, and used a pick to pull the small end out of its landing ring, but is there another clamp on the steering box end? If so, how do I get to it?

ALSO, looking on rockauto, there appears to be inner tie rods for TRW style or Saginaw style. How do I tell what kind I have? thanks!!!

I believe there is one, its a band crimp style and not a threaded type

When I was doing research for the same Saginaw vs TRW question, I came upon this answer. "TRW has a screw in dust cap, Saginaw has a pressed in cap." Pretty sure they're referring to the cap on the bottom where the steering shaft connects to the rack. I haven't tested the theory myself though.

They're referring to the cap at the bottom of the pinion.

The inner tie rod boot is usually held on with a crimp clamp as stated above. Once you have it off, you'll need a special inner tie rod wrench to get the inner tie rod off. There's no enough room to get a wrench on it and apply any torque. Plus there's usually a crimp on the end of the inner tie rod to keep it from backing off the rack.

The correct tool will save a lot of time, swearing and broken knuckles.

Here's a video of a Good Old Boy changing inner tie rods. It's on a Ford truck, but the princpal is the same.

Sweet, thanks. I can handle that!!! I think AutoZone rents out those inner tie rod tools. I seem to remember seeing that.
