    Shake under acceleration

Since I put the struts and outer tie rods on the Voyager, I have noticed a shimmy in the steering wheel under accelleration. Mostly when taking off fom a stop, it doesn't do it while driving.

I was assuming it was the old tires and lack of wheel alignment. I replaced the tires and had an alignment done, the shaking is still there. The alignment shop doesn't have any ideas. I'm going to change the inner tie rods and look at the hubs. I'll loosen the motor mounts and align the engine too.

    Any other suggestions?

    Axles?

    Re: Shake under acceleration

Sounds like what I had going on in my Daytona for a bit. I finally narrowed it down to a fresh Autozone reman axle. I replaced it with a 190k+ mile Saginaw and the vibration went away. I didn't bother tearing into it since I could just return it and get another.

Sounds like the same thing my CSX was doing. Chased it for a while, was a bad axle.

    Re: Shake under acceleration

Assuming the engine mounts are good and the drivetrain isn't torqueing too far causing an axle shaft to bind, yeah, it sounds like an axle shaft is bad.

    Re: Shake under acceleration

    1. The previous owner changed the long, passenger side axle, I was driving it today and it feels like the driver's side. It makes more noise turning left especially going up a driveway.

    Thanks for all the input.

Rockauto has Cardone axles and states there were vans with equal length axles.

Opinions? Anyone have a van with equal lenth shafts?

    Whats a good brand?

I have never seen a minivan with equal length axles unless you kinda sorta count the 3.3/3.8 AWD vans.

    Re: Shake under acceleration

A replacement left front axle took care of 99% of the shaking. I noticed that the hubs are a little loose, I'll have to order a set of those next.

Good to know. I have the same issue with the Lancer and did the same work replacing the front end suspension and still had it. Sounds like I need to replace an axle.

I should know by now to just replace it all at one time. I think it's going to need a fuel pump too...

    Re: Shake under acceleration

Actually, i have the very same situation going on in Mini right now. I had put some new axles from RockAuto in over a year ago.
I do think i need a better alignment as well. Wasn't really happy with the last alignment outcome.

Well maybe that's it, then. I've never actually looked underneath a factory 5spd turbo van since i've only seen like 2 in my life. Hah! My factory 5spd TBI van has unequal length axles.

Would it work on an automatic transmission?

    Re: Shake under acceleration

I would bet that when you replaced the struts, you pulled the inner out of its joint then putting the struts back in, the axle slid in but some of the rollers fell off. See if a lot with DIY'ers. Also don't forget to center the engine.

Yes, I run equal length in my van. I have an FAQ on the different axle lengths. Van's had the longest jack shaft with its own block bracket, then Cars then L body's.

I run Minivan short axles and a Daytona jack shaft and matching bracket. I have a minivan one here but never needed to use it,

Outer joint was bad. Inner was fine. A hole in the boot allowed all of the grease to run out over the past 27 years.
