take off the plastic covers around the column, the retainer is a 1/8 pin or rod, you can only depress it with the key in a particular position.

edit my bad, I misunderstood. its out.

Definitely.the wrong year. No.way to bypass the anti rotation stops. No detents to push either. I need to pull the tumbler out of the center so I can access the keys

    Re: key tumbler, disassemble?

Do you have any pictures of the unit? I've done hundreds of GM and Fords, they all work similar. Sometimes there is a piece on the end you have to remove, then insert the key and rotate it, then depress the detent, wherever it is, and you should be able to turn it farther while pulling it apart at the same time. Older GM's are a little trickier, yours may be like that. Are there one or two spring loaded small brass "rods" sitting in the outer piece that spring outward toward "face" of the lock cylinder?

Take piece off end, rotate with key until it stops, press down on brass pins using small pick, allows you to rotate farther than usual, rotate and pull apart.

That is exactly what i am working with but taking the end off is my dead end. It's not made to be removed on my oem part. Pushing the two brass rods with the end still attached can't work. All is need to do is replace the end piece so if it came off i would be happy. I have a 15 dollar replacement comng In the mail. I didn't want to take apart apart a 70 dollar auto parts store unit that is probably just as low quality.

Does the new one come fully assembled with a new key?

    Re: key tumbler, disassemble?

I've successfully popped the cylinder out by prying with a screwdriver at the back of the unit. It didn't damage the column. If I'm not mistaken, I've also removed the metal blocker that stops you from getting at the tumblers and then pried off the tumbler retainer before dumping the tumblers out. At that point, any Chrysler key (of the one sided or two sided nature depending on year) will turn the cylinder and you can get it out by traditional means.

I bought a new ignition key cylinder for my 90 Daytona a couple years ago (bought it at O'Reillys) and yes it came fully assembled with a new key. All I had to do then was install it in the column. Very easy to do.

That is true, because that is what I did also. The problem the OP is trying to figure out is how to re-key the new cylinder to match the existing lock sets in the car. Carrying 2 keys for the same car is a pain.

Yeah, I worked on getting the actual tumbler out of the carrier for a couple of days since I knew it must be possible. But I never figured it out, so now I carry two keys for that car. It was a pain at first, but I got used to it.

    Re: key tumbler, disassemble?

Since it comes with a new key, maybe they are not designed to be taken apart? The news ones I used to get for GM/Ford came already dis-assembled with no key, but enough tumblers to rekey it to any key code needed. You could always rekey the door locks to match the new ignition.

I was thinking the same thing, I will pull a set of door handles out of storage and see if the locksets are sealed like the ignition is.

    Re: key tumbler, disassemble?

I've removed ignition lock cylinders from columns without a key, 50/50 chance of damaging the column. I have never been able to tear the actual cylinder apart without a key, unless you cut it open and cause massive damage.

one advantage to having different ignition and door keys is that you can start and lock the car then still get in afterwards

helps in the cold mornings .. just saying

You need two keys for that on two rings still. If I'm going to keep two keys on my person I'd prefer to have them the same so I don't accidentally lock the one for the doors in the car.
