Backup Lights not working, but I think I know why.

Since the Shadow was a 2.2 turbo with a 5 spd and now it's a 2.5 auto, I believe I have found out why my backup lights don't work.

Looking for my radiator leak I found a connector on the front of the A-413 that didn't have a plug on it. It has 3 prongs on it. Also, while looking down there I found an empty plug. The plug has openings for 2 prongs.

So, I'm guessing the 2 prong plug is from the 5 spd tranny and now I need a 3 prong plug to attach to the auto.

    Sound about right or not?

    Thanks!
    Paul

Can I just splice a 3 prong plug in there?

Yeah, the third prong is the neutral safety switch that lets you start the car only when it's in Park/Neutral.

I dunno, I do know if your switch goes bad, you can jump the outer 2 wires on the plug and it will start. So I think the center one is for the back up lights. Maybe someone can back me on this.

Where is the "probe" located? (caution) Standard A413's have a 2 prong located on the flat next to the dipstick for the "lock-up" servo.

The wire that leads to the backup lights is white. The neutral/safety wire is brown. So you want to connect the white wire and the 3rd wire (I think it is blue or purple) to the backup lamp switch. You can just use female spade connectors if you shave a lilttle off the prongs on the switch.

Yep. That's where the "prongs" are, right next to the dipstick. But there are 3 on there. But since this is a 413, why are there 3?

In either case, it's going to wait, see my post in the Maint. section...not too good.

12V in, backup lamp output, neutral safety output.

With all that is going on my life I am having a hard time figuring this out.

So, Since I have a 2 opening plug and a 3 prong connector, if I want to use the existing plug, can I just clip off one of the 3 prongs or do I need to splice in a 3 opening plug?

If I splice, which way doesn the connector hook up to the connection? I don't want to hook it up backwards and blow something...

    Thanks!

P.S. This all assumes that the repair bill on the "pop-oil light-motor stopping" isn't too much. I'll find out Monday.
