Where to start? 1984 Dodge Omni GLH

    Hi All,

    First post , new member.
I just purchased a used 1984 Dodge Omni GLH and would like to know where to get started on restoring it to a daily driver?
It is in really good shape, but has a couple issues. I have checked all fluids and will be checking the brakes.

    1. Right wheel bearing makes some noise. (Need to replace)
    2. The passenger door handle broke the first time I pulled up on it. (replaced)
    3. Shifter boot is completely split (I have looked for replacements, but these seem to be hard to find)
    4. The shifter linkage is also really mushy, I have looked online and Great Lakes has a kit to take the play out. (has anyone tried this? $70 seems like a good deal)
    5. The left front needs new ball joints and a tie rod.

Any info and/or resouces would be appreciated. Thank you.

This is what you want for your rod shift car.

Napa HD is good for tie rod and ball joint. You'll need to grind the weld off the old ball joint and press the new one in and lock with with a c-clip. I spot welded my new one in as factor did.

Is that the GLH that was o for sale near Rockford? I was looking at that one, good to know it went to someone with interest in the car.
Buy MOOG ball joints and tie rods. They are the best. Rock auto.com has good prices on those and will have bearings too.
I have a few shift boots and probably most anything else you would need.
As for the shift linkage, I've sold over 500 linkage kits, no complaints so far.

Yes it was the car forsale near Rockford.
Bought it from the original owner.
It is a good car, just needs some TLC.

Hey! Nothing wrong with a few N/A builds thrown in here and there...

I love the turbo in my Daytona, but the nasty little carbed 2.2 in my Scamp is blast as well. And an N/A 2.2 with headers and a big exhaust generates a sound that a turbo just can't match. Ask the Hoosier SDAC guys who were on the Fall colors tour with me...

Where to start? Leave it Carbureted.....

    -Weber DFEV 32/36
    -Hooker Header
    -Camshaft (Mopar '767')
    -Mill head 60 thou
-Offset Cam Keys (or adjustable cam gear)
-Remove ALL emission controls and unnecessary vacuum lines

If you want to turbo an omni, buy a TBI and bastardize it, would be a hell of a lot easier..... Not many carb GLHs left... Especially 84's....

    Hi Dominic,

Where can I find a new Weber DFEV 32/36?

I have seen this on Ebay, but I want to make sure this fits my 1984 Dodge Omni 2.2L GLH.

    Thanks,
    Alan

That's the one you want. It's from Redline, so it's a genuine Weber carb.

DO NOT buy the kit from webercarbsdirect! They are cheap Chinese knock-offs that will give you ulcers at night trying to get them tuned...

Just a note: Many of the folks run the Weber 38 DGES with the supercharger. It's a larger carb, for better flow, but it's not a progressive carb like the DFEV. Depends on your end goal. The DFEV will work fine with the supercharger, plus you get electric choke. With the DGES, you have to run a manual choke cable...
