What Ed says in the video is pretty much referring to the T850 trans. The difference is that the T850 does not have any brass synchonizers. All of them including reverse are like what the 89+ 1-2 setups are. Thats why the Mobil1 synthetic works fine in the T850s. I would seriously run standard 5W30 in the 520....

I tried Castrol GTX 5W30 and it is terrible. You can hear a clipping like sound as I shift from 1-2. I would guess it is wearing down the synchonizers.
Interesting this noise did not exist a couple of days before I removed the 50/50 factory fill 5W30/Mobil 1 5W30. Honestly I wish I saved the fluid.
Currently I am running, 30 weight diesel oil but it is tres cranky to shift cold, 32F this morning and took 15 minutes before it shifted OK. I am thinking that perhaps I have a bad syncro (one for 1-2) as the car never did like the 1-2 shift ever since new.

If you get a chance, Eds Phoenix 97 video is the one to watch. He specifically talks about our trans. weak spot, the int. shaft bearing surface. I don't believe its on youtube.

    Thanks

As per your last message, I tried to find Mobil 5000 5W-30 locally here in Canada but no luck. Mobil 1000 and 2000 are available everywhere.

Mobil 5000 comes in a 'regular' and 'high mileage' for the U.S market.

Looking on mobil canada's webpage the Mobil 1000 is the same thing as the 'regular' 5000 sold here in the states and the mobil 2000 is the 'high mileage' version which they are saying is a synthetic blend so its probably not a good idea to use in this case.

    Thank you
Mobil 1000 is on sale at Canadian tire today. I will go get some to try as my transmission is draining as we speak.

Sorry, I don't think its online.

T.U. sold VCR tapes of Phoenix 97 and they were full of good info pertaining to our cars from an engineers (E.P.)view.

    Thanks

Re: 520 Transmission Oil for my DD

    SUCCESS!!!! We have success
Mobil 1000 5W30 works fantastic, Castrol GTX 5W30 sucks big time. Just goes to shows not just any 5W30 works in our transmission.

The shifting with Mobil 1000 5W30 in the car is better than it has ever been!!!

I would like to thank everyone for their help.
    Regards,
    Miles

Good deal! Makes total sense to me as your 87 trans has brass for all 5 synchros. Brass rings love the standard Mobil 5w30

Yes so I bought 5 x 4 litre as it was 40% off on sale at Canadian Tire. Thanks for the advice.
Any idea why it works well?

    izzz not castrol

    .. castrol kills

believe it or not the trans has the same stiff to shift cold issues with the early atf fill the 525 trans came with too

guess you learned not to put castrol in your engine from this too .. right?

(cost me 6 motors before I switched to q state)

With this in mind, you think the Mobil 1 HM would work good in a 568?

Technically it works for 1st and 2nd gear "better" but 3-4-5 still are brass and they will not like it as much. Save some money and run std Mobil and your brass will be happier with you lol
