    90 amp alternator choice

i have two 90 amp alternators available that i can use in my swap using a smec harness: 1) the ND 5233418 out of my 89 van or 2) a ND 4727220 out of a 98 2.4 caravan. dimensionally they are identical. pulley will be swapped as needed to a vbelt to work with my underdrive pulley if i can find one that works.

so, is there a preference of one over the other? they are both externally regulated i believe.

i do like the compactness of them but if i could find one that was even shorter (along the shaft axis dimension, diameter doesn't matter) would be even better. anything like that out there that would connect up to the smec harness easily, maybe 120 amp also?

or if there is a nice small one out there i would be ok with maybe an internally regulated one (don't know the downside to this if any.)

making my own mounting brackets so that is not an issue.

Yes, Nippodenso 120amp alternator is the best one to get.

If choosing from either used 90 amp unit it would be worth the effort to pull the brush holder and see which unit has the lesser amount of wear on the slip rings.

FWIW I went with the 'new' Denso 120 amp unit via Rockauto and have been very pleased with the results.

I've been told that there is a slight difference in size between the 120 and 90 amp versions of ND alternators.

could you give me a rough measurement of end of shaft to end of housing as well as diameter. right now the 90's are as big size wise as i want to go or i'll bump into my turbo intake tubing.

The 120 is most definitely 'fatter' across the diameter than the 90, that extra 30 amps has to come from somewhere. I can measure one tomorrow.

    Re: 90 amp alternator choice

Yeah the 120 amp is larger, but only slightly. I myself would be content with running the 90 amp version, unless I had amps and subs like my Shelby Lancer. I will go with the 120 amp version for that car.

I have also heard there is a 160 amp version from a later Dodge truck, but I can't confirm that.

    here's the 90 amp size.

basically, 6 inches from beginning of shaft to end of housing and 5 inches in diameter

Before I forget: These dimensions are approximate..

From the edge of the pulley to the edge of the plastic insulator that the output cable goes to it is 7", to the edge of the case is about 6.5"

the case is about 6" in diameter.

    Re: 90 amp alternator choice

I installed a ND from a 1999 Camry, they have a built in voltage regulator. It is a 90 amp model. Basically is very close to the stock unit. Shimming it to align with the crank pulley and some ingenuity to get it bolted up was minor. Something to consider given the issues we can run into with internal voltage regulators in the LMs, maybe not so much as with the SMEC/SBECs though.
