The quick and get you moving fix would be to purchase a new passenger side 'long' axle for a TBI car and install it. It is a debated topic here but many have done away with that entire intermediate shaft assembly successfully for a number of reasons.
Parts support for that assembly is non existent besides the U-joint. Or luckily enough (if you view it that way) for you it broke but did not take out anything else while doing so. Many others have not been so fortunate.
Being an 86 and earlier your at an additional disadvantage as your transmission has the 'small' spline axles so unless you change some internal transmission parts or the entire unit for an 87 or later one. The more commonly available 87+ intermediate assembly will not work directly.

135,
Thanks for the info. I've read up on the other posts about long vs intermediate. I would still like to find a donor intermediate but if I can't it's going to have to be a long shaft conversion.
Any idea if there is a direct fit passenger axle for my car and how much time to swap?
I'm not a mechanic and would have to pay a local shop to install. Hopefully a swap is not to complicated without to much fabrication.
Just purchase an axle for your same car, non turbo.
Direct fit, no fabrication, just remove the old assembly and install the new, long replacement.
I might have an intermediate shaft from a 1986 GLHT, I believe the shafts interchange but not the CV axle or bracket.
Thanks

GLH,
Thanks for the detail. I'm trying to find the part number. Any chance you have handy?

Double check the part # application when you order the axle. I just did an ebay search and the axle is listed for 1984-1989 from at least 3 sellers, which is incorrect. Rock auto lists it correctly for 1984-1986, not 1984-1989 like the ebay sellers.
As mentioned the spline that fits the trans is larger from 1987 and newer.
As Mike mentioned, you'll never notice the difference as many of us have ditched the int shaft system with no ill effects.
Thanks

I can't even recall why the intermediate shaft was there but when I had a problem I also went with an N/A conventional axle & no problems
Equal length axles were thought to reduce torque steer. In order to use equal length shafts an intermediate shaft was required as the transmission is attached to the rear of the engine and not centered between the wheels. Although it sounds good in theory most who have ditched them found no difference and sometimes perceived a reduction in torque steer. Also, the intermediate shaft assembly often proved to be the weakest point and most problematic part of the drive axle assembly.
Thanks
