    $2015 Grassroots Challenge Results

Since the Rampage wasn't done, and GRM was asking for former challenge cars back for the 15th challenge, I decided to bring the black Shadow back again. It had been there in '08, '09 and again in '13 when it finally took the win. I didn't really want to bring it back as it was, so I decided to change it up and shoot for the $1000 class. In that class, we compete against all entrants and they award the $1k win to the highest placing $1k car. Long story short, I stripped off much of the good stuff and ended up with a stock T-II/568, questionable dampers on all four corners, no gauges, no nitrous and very heavy autox wheels with old rubber.

The result: 3rd in the drags with a 12.16 @ 111, 9th in the autox, 6th in the concours. This was good for 4th overall out of 55 entrants and we did win the top fishing $1k car.

Best part of the weekend was that I took my son Sean, who is almost 11. I entered the car under his name, we wrote up the vehicle info sheet as if it was his (ex: Occupation: 5th Grade Class Representative. What would you do differently if you were to rebuild this car? Make the drivers seat higher...), had him turn in all the forms, talk about the car during the concours, ride shotgun during most of the autox (until we got caught!) and generally just hang out. Since it was his car, at the awards banquet, Sean's name was the one called to pick up our hardware. I'm pretty sure he liked being in the spotlight for a bit. He even made a very brief speech after grabbing the drag race award. It was hysterical! He also had the chance to meet Al Unser Jr., which was pretty cool. In the end, I'm sure he's been converted...he's already talking about going for the win with the Rampage. :-)

Pat, REALLY good seeing you again and meeting the BOSS, Sean! I asked him several times if he was having a good time and always there was a BIG smile with a YEAH! I would say that yep, he's been converted! Really nice young man! As for you my friend, DAMN good parenting!!!!
It was so cool hanging out with you guys as well as with Barry and Bill last weekend.

As we were talking, come to Wilmington next year to see my Rampage and I'll be back in Gainesville to see Sean and yours.

    Way cool Pat & Sean.

Pat, enjoy it. Spending time with your son is the most valuable time you will ever get. My oldest has NO interest in cars, other than as an appliance to get back and forth to school in. My youngest son absolutely loves going with me to car shows. He goes to virtually every one I attend. Awesome bonding time.

    Never let go of it.

    Re: $2015 Grassroots Challenge Results

Thanks, guys. I have to say, it was by far the best time I've ever had at an event because he was having so much fun as part of it. I expect he'll be at SDAC next year.

When we got home, it was funny hearing him tell Mom how we went from a 12.6 to a 12.1 by first trying boost, then backing the boost off and adding 1 degree of timing at a time until it stopped getting faster, how we had some great 60 foot times, etc. I'm sure my wife now realizes that the driveway and garage will be full for years to come. :-)

Found a vid of a 12.17 @ 111 run...the video was focused on the other lane, which was Andrew Nelson in his SBC Bug, but I'm the lucky guy getting my --- handed to me on his record breaking pass.

Fantastic! Those father-son (or daughter!) events can be a blast! I know my son loved going to Drag Week (DW) and Rocky Mountain Race Week (RMRW) with me. He and some friends are now plotting and planning on how to build their own car for RMRW/DW!

(I mention daughter because she said that she wants to go once she can drive. I look forward to an event were I am her co-pilot. She is 14 now, so about 2 years.)

Thats great Pat!! My daughter used to walk around the autocross course about the age your son is. She learned the line from walking it and listening to every one. We had good times.
Congratulations on the win AND the good times.
