    Alternator bushings

So my car throws the belt if I hammer on it a little. I've been through probably 4 belts in the last week or so....one I happened to get lucky and found on the road undamaged.

Last night it threw the belt again on the highway....limped the car to a gas station and while waiting for someone to come get me...noticed that possibly when I switched to the non-ac bracket that maybe the bushings were switched sides. The bushing with the T end was on the passenger side of the bracket....I switched the bushings around and put the T end bushing on the distributor side of the bracket.....the belt seems to ride more to the middle of the water pump pulley now. The bushings are not in that bad a shape and the holes are not very ovaled out. I never had an issue before I switched brackets.

Does anyone have a good reference for the orientation of the bushings?

Have you put a straight edge on the pulley and confirmed that it is
    1) parallel with the crank pulley?
    2) in the same plane as it's groove in the crank pulley?

From there I would check the condition of the bushings.
How much tension is on the belt?

In your driveway you should be able to simulate the conditions that throw the belt. Guessing, but bring up the electrical load (turn on everything!) then bring up the engine RPM and watch what happens... While I doubt it will throw the belt right away, I but you will get a clue on what the problem is... (flopping around, alternator is moving, worn bearings in the alternator are shifting the pulley, etc...)

    Re: Alternator bushings

My aftermarket water pump sticks the pulley out a bit further than OEM. This caused me slipping issues. I was able to use a couple of washers to slide the alternator over a bit. If alignment is your issue I would try that (along with polybushings, did those a long time ago!).

I've got a set of the PB Bushings I don't need if you want them. Just have to find them. They are for the 91+ cars

That's really awesome of you, but mine's got the older bushings.
