Oxygen sensor conversion from 1 wire to 4 wire

So I was on fwdperformance.com pricing a fuel pump since I'm more than likely going to need one with my car sitting for so long, when I ran across something I hadn't seen before... " 1 wire to 4 wire O2 conversion harness"

Now, I know the O2 is bad on my car, as it died on the way to Carlisle in 2007, and has been disconnected ever since so I will be installing a replacement before I drive the car. I just have one thing... Is there a benefit to having a 4 wire O2 sensor, and if so what is it?

If I have to replace the sensor anyway I might want to upgrade if there is a benefit.

I don't know the benefits, but I'm pretty sure you'll need to upgrade your electronics to SMEC in order to utilize the 4 wire O2. My TII LM electronics is 3 wire and I think 4 wire was SMEC and SBEC.

I updated my S60 wiring for a 4 wire sensor. You just need to add the extra grounds and a heater wire to the ASD circuit. The benefit is an 02 sensor that heats up faster, and is less likely to foul.

Just stick with the 1 wire. If you are going upgrade, skip 3 or 4 wires and go to straight to wideband.

That's a good point. Get the wideband that will push out the signal and don't worry about using the stock O2. You can plug the hole or as some have done, move the wideband to the stock location. Some will tell you should put it down in the exhaust, others have had no issue with it in the stock location. But that would be the simplest way to deal with replacing a stock O2 sensor vs. wiring for 3 or 4 wire O2s.

Thanks for the tips guys. I like the look of the wideband so that will be an upgrade for later. In the mean time I'll stick with the one wire.

Here are the pages for a 4 wire O2. This is an 89 G body diagram, but it should be applicable for most if not all SMEC and SBEC cars.
