    Transmission swap question.

Will a automatic transmission from a 1986 Dodge Aries wagon 2.2lt. EFI non- turbo be a bolt in to a 1988 Chrysler Town & Country wagon 2.5lt. EFI non-turbo?

After removing the transmission and axles will the car be able to roll out of the garage? I replaced the front axles on the Chrysler before but don't remember if the car would roll on it's tires so I can tie up only one garage space for the swap.

    Thanks.

    Re: Transmission swap question.

It will bolt in but there are a few issues.

From memory and assuming both cars haven't been through this same thing prior..

1988 would have large spline axles, 8 bolt flex plate at the crank, 4 bolt converter with lockup and an electrical plug near the trans dip stick.

The 1986 trans will have smaller spline axles so they will have to be swapped with the trans., and I don't think it will be lockup, but that's no problem, just no lockup.

Possible problem is the flexplate/converter, early engines had 6 bolt flexplates and 3 bolt converters, changes were made during 1985-86. Early converters don't fit later transmission due to the pump drive hub.

Worst possible scenario in a 4 bolt converter against a 3 bolt flexplate, when I ran into this problem I re drilled the 3 bolt to accept the 4 bolt converter. Line up one hole and drill the other 3, keeping the TDC mark on the converter in mind and there's not much "meat" to drill on one flexplate hole.

Rolling the car without axles is a crap shoot, some bearings come apart in 6 inches, so I always use a long bolt and nut with large washers.

If I missed anything someone will chime in !!

    Thanks
    Randy

I have a pair of axle stubs that I use to roll/move a car without axles to prevent bearing damage. Easily made from junk driveshafts.

That's what I always do with my cars. Most of us have a pile of old axles by now anyway.

    Re: Transmission swap question.

Both transmissions only have the one electrical plug that I believe is the NSS/ Rev switch.
    How do I tell a lock-up from non-lock-up
    Thanks for the replys.
