    Autozone Rack&Pinion?

    Hey all,

It's finally time to replace the rack&pinion in my '89 Lancer Shelby. I've been looking around for anything with a "quick ratio" rack and the only thing I've found so far was this rack from Autozone. It describes having a lock-to-lock turn of 2.25. Has anyone used this, or know if this is true information?

    Thanks,

    Zach

The link you provided say turns lock to lock is 3.25. If that's the case, it's not a fast ratio rack. My Daytona has the fast ratio rack, and it's only 2.25 turns lock to lock.

If you can do without the car for a little bit, I believe Steer & Gear will rebuild your unit for you. That way you are guaranteed you get a fast ratio back...

Do not count on any of the aftermarket junk to be right. More often then not there not correct and it is a random occurrence when you actually get the same thing as the original.

    Is yours leaking ?

That's the way to go or contact Polybushings for someone more local to you. There are still rebuilders of parts in the large cities that rely on their reputation for business.

    Re: Autozone Rack&Pinion?

I have bought reman 'fast ratio' rack & pinion assemblies from Rock Auto and NAPA and have been pleased so far. It's easy to check the number of turns when you get it using a steering coupler. I have also had the RP gear in my GLH Turbo rebuilt by Steer And Gear and was very pleased with the quality and turn-around time. Usually the fast ratio racks are 2.25 to 2.5 turns lock-to-lock.

If I had to buy one again, I would go to Steer And Gear if I had a known good rebuildable core. If not, I would buy one at NAPA and check the number of turns before leaving the store with it.
