Not all 86+ distributors are created equally

So this weeekend while doing some fab work and maintenance to the fleet I discovered this tid bit. The distrib on the left was pulled from my new yorker's motor but it was a built commonblock so I don't know if the distrib is the stock 87 unit or if I pulled it from something else. The shutter wheel is loose on it. The distrib on the right is from an un-known year and car. The pinning that hold the rotor pickup in place is obviously much stronger. I looked through my shop and found another one of these types so they aren't an anomaly but I don't know if they're later or earlier than the melted plastic pinned ones. The shutter wheel on the brass pinned one is completely secure and I don't see the possibility of it failing anytime soon.

Does anyone have any more info on the years these might be in? Be nice to have this in the knowledge center so people can be on the lookout for them.

I wonder if the better one is some sort of TSB or recall part? I don't think I've ever seen one like that but will defiantly be keeping a eye out.

One of the right is a re-man from one of the aftermarket companies. I had one in the Reliant since there is no danger of losing the shutter wheel.

    Working on clearing the decks.

What kind of symptoms did the NY have that made you check this?

A symptom of an idiot plow driver not looking behind him when he backs up while plowing my work parking lot.

But being an Auto it might of hid some of the jumping timing events.
