    Brake light sockets

These always seem to fail at the ground terminal. Is there a replacement terminal out there, or should I just replace the whole socket?

Not so much a fail as a looseness. I just put a small self tapping screw in from the back and that tightens them up.

I've done that before, but I find that the terminals eventually break and lose contact. I was hoping that there would be replacement terminals, but I'm guessing not.

I'd look to use one of these replacements or a parts yard and splice it in. Page 2 there are ones for the brake lights, 2 contact.

Thanks. I ordered up a couple of sockets and I'll splice them in.

    Re: Brake light sockets

Is this the ones you ordered and how did it fit. The sockets on the CSX are probably in the same shape as yours requiring shimming and tweaking and what not to get them to work and that only lasts for so long.

That looks like the same one. They seem to be of good quality, but I don't have them 100% installed yet. I'm 2/3 of the way through doing the pass side of the car. Hopefully I can get them finished up tomorrow.

on my old winter beater aries, i just tightened drywall screws in there to wedge the connection tight....

on my 3L reliant, i used little bits of the spray tubes from WD40 cans.

on my turbo reliant, untouched. im sure ill have to fix them soon now that i said something lol.

    Re: Brake light sockets

I just finished the installation and they seem to work perfectly. The fit is the same as the stock ones for sure. I'm pretty cheap, but these things are well worth it.

    Re: Brake light sockets

The wheels of over think and over complicate things have been turning and I thought about doing some newer style sealed
    sockets.

Right now both of of the ground tab terminals on mine are MIA. I stripped the wire and stuffed it back through and folded it over the side of the socket to make contact with the bulb.

    Re: Brake light sockets

I jammed little finishing nails in there 8ish years ago, not even sure what is holding them together now but I remember being really mad at them maybe 2 years ago.

Would be nice to have a better design like the AA bodies. Can't open that last link.

I tried that once, but it was a mess. I'm sure it was my skill level or lack thereof at the time.

soldering to steel is tough sometimes but acid core solder works.... you just have to make sure you clean it real good afterwards.

i have soldered copper to steel with rosin core solder though.

    Re: Brake light sockets

As an update, my turn signals still don't function properly. I think I just need to break down and run a better ground off of the sockets and to the body at the latch for the hatch or some such.
