    Replacing lock cylinders

I'm wanting to replace all the locks on a 1986 GLH Turbo. The original (only) key still works in the doors but it is extremely worn out. You also no longer need a key at all to start and drive the car. The trunk key is long gone...

I've found the lock cylinders on Rock Auto, but I want the keys for the front doors and ignition lock cylinder to match (like stock). Is it possible to buy a matched set or is it possible to rekey the cylinders so that they do match? What about the glove box....should it use the same key as the trunk?

Any competent lock smith can make all the cylinders match a specific key. Last time I had it done was about $10 per cylinder

    Re: Replacing lock cylinders

A locksmith can work wonders. For under 30 dollars, I had a locksmith take my broken ignition key cylinder in my Daytona, make a factory key based on it, then he took my lock cylinder that I bought aftermarket for cheap, and keyed it to the factory key. He did this in under an hour.

To answer your question though, you can probably buy any aftermarket key cylinder for your trunk, remove one of the door or ignition cylinders, and go to a locksmith and ask them to make a factory key for you and re-key your aftermarket trunk cylinder cheaper than it is to replace all cylinders.

Yes a locksmith can work wonders and replace all the locks at pretty affordable cost. So search for nearby locksmith and get the locks done by them.

    Re: Replacing lock cylinders

if I remember correctly the ignition key works the hatch lock
the "trunk" key only fits the glovebox

the bezzel or face of the glovebox lock comes off so you can remove the lock from the glovebox door

there's a method to remove it with a paperclip or other piece of stiff wire in the fsm's

    Re: Replacing lock cylinders

L body ign lock is the easiest to replace
remove both cover pieces , use hacksaw blade to cut plastic from behind drift pin that retains the cylinder
punch out pin driving it back (to cluster) and all the way out
pull out cylinder , swap in replacement and drive pin back in from the front

should take no more than 5-10 min
way way to easy to steal....

if you have a few door locks you should be able to salvage the correct tumblers to match a key

I did my door locks on my 73 roadrunner years ago - I only had three sets of locks to scavenge the tumblers from
