    555 diff cover

I have 2 555 cases. One is toast(intermediate bearing hole is fubar) and the other is good. The fubar one has the diff cover and the good one doesn't. I know the covers are originally machined to fit with the case, but has anyone had any luck with making a cover work on another case?
I can get the bearing support and ext housing on but I have to tap them on with a mallet. Not beat them on, but they won't slide on easily. You can feel the edge of the case or cover when you run your finger around the bore.
Hate to scrap a good case and cover for being 0.020-0.025 off.

If you take the two alignment sleeves out how bad is it ? Are the two halves the same depth/width that they would line up. The bearing housings are really what keeps it all square to itself, if there installed to the case and then the cover is placed on top there should be enough slop around the bolt holes on the cover and within the bolt holes on the bearing housings that it might work.

Both sides are the same and off in the same direction. If you pull the sleeves out, it will line up and the bolts will still turn by hand. I thought it would be OK, but I don't have as much experience with these transmissions as many others and wanted to check. Thanks.
