McCall's Daytona, Shelby Z or Turbo Z ?

In the 80's there was a tv show called "Hunter" it ran from 84-91. The female lead of the show "Dee Dee McCall" drove Daytona's. Chrysler sponsered the show, so of course it's new Daytona turbo Z was the car of choice in 84 for the cop to drive. Early episodes had a 84 turbo z, and later it was update to a 85 model, which was used for most of the first seasons. Later she was given a a Shelby Z to drive. However there is this odd ball car that appears for half a season or so. It is right during the early third season which was fall 1986- spring 1987. Filming probably started sometime summer 86 for the fall tv season.

I'm guessing since Chrysler sponsered the show, they wanted to feature their updated model even though it wasn't ready for showrooms yet.

This odd ball car has the 87-88 body style, but is labeled as a "turbo z" and still has the 86 style (almond)yellow tan interior, with the bunchy leather door panels and turbo z style seats with hand air pump and if you look closely has the 84-86 style digi dash, which a Shelby z shouldn't have, it also has a 12 button navigator, again something a shelby z shouldn't have had from the factory. The car also has no rear badges, and the front intake is body color and not the matte black.

Personally I'd love to find this car, always wondered what happened to it after filming. In later episodes it is a correct Shelby z in every way.

Good observations! It also has the '86 seatbelts, not the '87 "suicide seatbelts" mounted to the door...

t-top cars always had the pillar mounted seat belts, no top door frame to attach to.

So how did they comply with the stupid 'passive restraint' law before air bags? Or I guess it wasnt a law as much as a saftey rating...

As much as I watched this show during the day even I never noticed this oddball Daytona. It looks like an '86 turbo Z they converted over to '87 Shelby Z stuff. I often wonder what happened to all these cars they used. Hunter destroyed one of the '85 ones as I recall. Good find though on what would be a very rare Daytona if we could ever find it.

Turbo Z stickers on the doors. Watch the Wraith, there is a white Tona in the bad guys shop with a newer nose. But if you look at the release date on the film it's like 1985 or 1986. So they had that nose for a while.

The wraith was released in 86. I remember seeing a discussion on that somewhere. I think it actually is an 87 nose on an older car.

Yes, although in a few rare cases you could hear the correct engine, and you could hear the turbo spool, which is way cool!

Always thought it would be fun to make one of these, but haven't found a good car to start with. Thought about painting my white t-top car red, but then I found out white with tan and t-tops is really rare.

Definitely black crab wheels with the outer lip polished...they certainly look nice that way
