    Early L-body tach wiring

Hey Gang, Im installing a dash cluster for a customer in a Rampage. The original dash had no tach but the replacement does. I have the wiring diagram but I dont have the 3 wire connector for the tach so Im unsure of which pin goes where. Anyone have the pinout or a pic they can forward? Thanks!!

Brian, is it an 83? I converted my Scamp from a base cluster to a ralley cluster and had to wire mine up. I don't remember the wire colors off the top of my head, but I can look it up tonight in my FSM when I get home, and let you know.

Yes, it is an 83. I have the color codes for the wiring but I am missing the connector for the tach. It's a 3 wire plug shaped like a rectangle.

Brian, I have wiring diagrams for an 85, not sure how similar they are. Let me know if you want the pages and I'll post them up. I'll go read through the manual now just to see if there are any similarities that can help.

83 down are the same, and 84+ are the same. 84 was the big transition year for wiring changes in the L-body's.

Brian, I know the exact connector you are talking about. Rectangular with one end pointed. I know it hooks up like an aftermarket tach in the 83's, it's not run through the computer, it takes a signal directly off the coil. IIRC, one wire is +, one -, and the third goes to the coil, I just don't remember which is which without looking at the FSM.

Another thing to note: If you are converting it from a base cluster, to a Rallye cluster, it uses the same connectors, but the pin-outs are completely different. Ask me how I know... Most of the wires don't even stay on the same connectors, and the base wiring harness isn't long enough to allow them to go to the other connector. I had to splice in 6-8" sections of wire on several pins to do the conversion. Took me about 4 hours one night to get it all correct.

Sounds like 85 won't be useful, but here they are for reference.

    Thanks everyone.

83scamp, all the wires are swapped over and the gauges are all working correctly. Only 1 wire stays in the same connector in the same position between the 2 clusters- the fuel level wire, ha.

Mike, if it has the connector view I am looking for, id appreciate it!

Awesome. I remembered that only one wire didn't change, but couldn't remember which one. Knowing your reputation with these cars, I figured you had that covered, but I wanted to put it out there just in case.

This isn't Bigbarneycars Scamp by chance is it? He told me he was going to have you finish it... Probably not, he has a Lebaron dash in his...

If it's in there, I'll get it scanned tonight and send it over.

Sorry, my version only goes to 83 and I don't think I have any drivability books older than '82
