    Slight growling noise from OBX?

I have an OBX differential in the 520 transmission in my GLH. I've noticed a slight growling noise coming from the transmission when coming to a stop and at intermittent cruising speeds. Oil is full (Redline MTL). I upgraded the bellville washers and diffrential bolts.

This is the first transmission with an OBX that I have had, are these differentials noisy, or it it a ticking time bomb?

Andy I've never experienced any additional noise running Quaife or OBX torque biasing LSD's. Certainly not while going straight, cruising, or decelerating. Do you remember what did you set the bearing preload to? Every OBX I've ever installed required more than the factory shim to set preload. Did you change the races in the diff housings when you put new bearings on the diff?
I was sort of surprised by the amount of preload my original diff had on the last 523 I tore down. It was at .013-.014" preload. This was 62k mile tranny. I set my OBX at .009 preload as I felt this was too tight.

Any chance you can make it make the noise just turning the wheel by hand on jackstands? Might help isolate what it is somehow?

something that might be a thought

with the "upgrade" to using engine oil in the trans instead of the atf like the earlier trans used is anyone remembering to use oils or additives for lsd diff's ?

might help - probably can't hurt

ford sells a little green bottle of it for like 6 bucks at the dealerships

it can be hard to find motor oil with friction modifyer for limited slip diffs I'll admit lol

Torsen diffs don't use additives. They work mechanically.

Is your fluid silvery? Preload is not something I am afraid of.

I'm running Redline MTL, not engine oil.

The fluid in the transmission is clear, no metal I can see.

I set the bearing preload to the specs in the 1988 service manual.

I'll get it up in the air and turn the wheels to see if I can hear anything. It could even be a wheel bearing.
