Did I discover a new tool?

Ever break a drill bit down a drilled hole. If so you will know it is a PITA to remove, well here is what I made when I could not remove the broken piece deep in the hole.

First I ground one half of the spiral and then ground remaining to fit between the broken bit and the wall of the hole. To use, twist into the hole and through the broken bit. Pull down with a pair of vice grips.

I hope it works well for you as it did from me.

Looks like a pretty good solution to the problem. I'm not sure if something already exists to solve this. You may want to look into that.

    Cordes,
usually the broken piece is drilled out with a carbide bit, if a dental pick or punch did not work. I asked our ME at work, he said there are few good options. He liked the idea I show here.

You can test fit between grinding by trying to mate it in to another drill bit.. great solution.

Using carbide to cut out a broken hss/steel piece only really works if the hss/steel piece is firmly stuck and wont move, otherwise it will chip/break the carbide tool as it bounces around. This looks good cept you'd need to make it specifically for the exact drill bit size you broke right?

    BTW howd you break it?

How did I break the drill bit? You ask. Well first case, I was using cheap TiN Chinese bits, two drilling overhead on my back. I was replacing the sway bar bushings and two of the four K frame 8mm bolts were rusted on the inside and missed my undercoating circa 28 years ago. I just bought a good set of US made Triumph bits the other day, so I hope I will break less bits going forward.
yes, the tool is not general purpose as it works best on the same size drill. I just checked and you may be able to go up or down a 1/64" in a pinch.
The good news is you use the bit that just broke. I was thinking it may make a good curved pick as well.

Ahhh...now that has the smell of a quality idea.

BTW check out flea bay for good deals on single drill bits. There are a couple sellers who specialize in low cost, usa made, cobalt bits. Like this guy:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw...obalt&_sacat=0

I believe he combines shipping too so you save if you buy a few.

Ive heard some good things about harbor freight cobalt bit sets, although their diameter accuracy isnt so great. But apparently they do pretty well when worked hard. Definitely a cheap way to get ton of them..I think its like $100 for the 119 set, use a coupon when they are on sale and maybe you get it for $75 out the door

this works depending on the size drill you broke. If you're breaking drills regularly over .250" you're probably doing something wrong. Tilting the drill motor, not enough lube etc.

Acannell thanks for the eBay links but most US based seller change crazy shipping cost for us Canucks. But then again we tend to get hosed on prices anyway. 1.5x is not uncommon and typically can reach 2x when factoring in shipping.

I've managed before by hammering a nail each side of the bit then twisting out with vicegrips... depends how deep you snap though, but hard to see how you can manage to snap it very deep in a hole.
