    Electronic Speedo Options for L-Body

So my speedo cable is toast on my OMNI. Even with DEI heat shield, it still melted because it is in close proximity to header. I'm considering switching to an electronic speedometer, or using a device to drive the stock mechanical speedo off a VSS signal. Or, another option would be to use a 89 or 90 L body setup. Ideas/Comments/Suggestions?

The gauge cluster in my Rampage came from an '89...it's definitely mechanical.

Yeah, I believe 89 was the last year for the cable driven speedo in our cars. The omni got the dash revision in 90 only.

I would love a solution for this also, as I can't stand the cable driven speedometers. I would be very interested in a solution that allowed for the retention of the stock speedometer. I'm willing to be that some arduino guy has already done the hard work for us.

    I'm off to google.

Here are a couple of links. The one from the company who is already making a converter for the GM stuff looks to be the most promising.

    HA !!

if the digital cluster can be hacked to fit .. what about the analog 87-9 daytona cluster ?

granted that brings the known fails for that cluster too but ...

Here is what is going into Matchbox this week...I ordered it with white face. This place has an option where you can have them preload your mileage...the Box barely broke 305,000 miles the last drive home from the track and that is what I had them enter into it. Being a GPS unit means I can get rid of my cable too...maybe free up .01 hp! I will be putting tape over the odometer part when I race since you can get your 0-60 mph ET and 1/4 mile ET also. My son's Hellcat has that plus 1/8th mile on his stock gauges...wonder how NHRA deals with that since NO devices/gauges are allowed that indicate any measured time over distance. I also thought about putting in a kill switch on the far side of my car would work...far enough away that I would not be able to operate it from the drivers seat.

After I pulled the computer out, obviously the stock cluster didn't read correctly. These are Intellitronix gauges. You can run the speedo with the factory (electronic) vss or they offer a universal sender. They even offer a gps style sending unit that mounts under the dash and requires no signal input from the vehicle.

How hard could it be to hack a Daytona electronic speedo into the L-Body cluster? And keep the L-Body face? Maybe a new circuit board is required? That's not hard to do.

Hmm, I have both an L-Body and a Daytona now...

I know you said you have an L body and a G body, but looking at the L body dash, it looks like a P body speedometer may work better since it's completely round (the G/J body speedo and tach are flat on the bottom).

Dear god that is yummy! Interested in this thread as well, in my k-car build I would like to rid the cable and upgrade to the 4 wire Hall-effect speed sensor, but i'm stumped at the k-car analog cluster, don't really want to rid the analog gauges because my Daytona is all digital... but those intellitronix gauges look friggen fantastic

Their speedo is really cool. It does 0-60, 1/4 mile times as well. I'm not as crazy about their tach tho, it only reads in 100 rpm increments.

Supercrackerbox put a '90 Omni speedo in his Charger several years back.

Does anyone have a 1990 gauge cluster? I'm all for trying to modify just the speedometer portion to fit in the earlier cluster.

Re: Electronic Speedo Options for L-Body

I had a couple Daytona instrument clusters, and a couple of L-Body one's. The Daytona speedometer is too big to look right. I don't have any P body clusters to try.

I ordered this from Summit Racing last night. #Cordes There is no dimensions of it that I could find, so I'll just be winging it. This looks very similar to a L body factory gauge, other than the pointer is orange instead of white (were they originally orange and mine are just faded?) It looks a whole lot like a Daytona gauge. I will be removing the bezel (if it comes off) and/or painting it flat black. I really wanted the Speedhut GPS gauge, but it was a 2 week lead time, and kinda pricey.

What do the guts of the speedos look like? Any chance the faces could be swapped between them? It would mean you need a new face overlay with the right MPH scale on it, but it would also give you a 120mph speedo in an L-Body (instead of 85).

I'll check that out tonight if I get a minute Rob. Good idea.

Also, while I got the cluster out, I was thinking of upgrading all the 194 bulbs to LED. Good idea/bad idea? I like the less power consumption and less heat and hopefully longevity, but I do want them dimmable if possible.
