How to: Use a TBI Steel Skirt with a Turbo Valve Cover

This will be a pretty simple write up with pics on how to install a TBI Steel Skirt inside of a Turbo or Shelby Valve Cover. This skirt further prevents any oil from being slung into the PCV system. It is simple, and straight through, but those who are visual learners like myself, this will hopefully help you out a bit.

Step 1: Locate your valve cover

Step 2: Remove the bolts holding down the valve cover. The four bolts on the corners of the valve cover are 13mm, and the ones in between are 10mm.

Step 3: Remove the valve cover!

Step 4: Take the TBI Steel Skirt..

..and place it over the camshaft. It will only go on one way.

Step 5a: Remove the internal baffle that is inside the valve cover.

Note: If you do not remove the internal baffle and try to put the valve cover over the TBI Steel Skirt, well.. this

Step 5b: Remove the two 10mm bolts on the back of the valve cover that hold the baffle in place.

Step 6: Take a flat head screwdriver and pry the baffle loose. Once loose, lift it straight up and it should pop out.

Step 7: Find two nuts and bolts that will fit inside that bolt holes you removed from the baffle and put some RTV or JB Weld on them to seal them shut.

Step 8: Clean the mating surface of the valve cover to where there is no more old RTV. I used a flat head screwdriver and a wire brush.

Step 9: Make a good 1/8th inch bead of RTV in the little channel of the valve cover mating surface. I used Permatex Ultra Black gasket maker

Step 10: Take the valve cover, and put it over the TBI Steel Skirt. It should slip right over. Tighten the bolts and you're done!

Special thanks to Simon for the TBI Skirt and Rob for the PCV info!

Nicely done! Would be nice to see more details of the PCV set-up too.

I have all the pictures from when I put it together, this TBI Skirt was the last piece of the puzzle. Im still testing it to make sure it actually doesnt leak before I make the write up

Dang, one other thing I should have mentioned after looking at this; You can remove the oil deflector on the #1 and #2 cam bearing caps as it is obviously not needed with the baffle in place. I'm actually surprised the V/C went all the way down without having removed it.

I am swapping my aluminum "SHELBY" valve cover(multi-piece gasket) for an aluminum TBI valve cover (single piece gasket). But on these the oil deflector will need to be removed or the TBI cover will not sit flat. This is on my 87 GLHS.

does it fit tight or does it rattle around.

originally those skirts had rubber bumpers on the top that got squished a little when the valve cover got tightened down.

This one had one rubber stopper on top of it. Once it got tightened down, it didn't make any sound. If I take the oil cap off and try to move it, its pretty solid

The "curtain" style deflector will still fit, but you may have to remove the small one between the cam towers on the one end of the head. Also, it kind of "snaps" into place, so it's easy to not get it all the way down, which would prevent the cover from fully seating. You can guess how I know this...

I didn't remove the oil deflector shield thing that can be seen in step 3. It fit just fine. Unless ya'll are referring to something else

I went to the local yard and pulled a bunch of TBI oil baffles so I can try this on my cars. One car at the yard even had an aluminum TBI valve cover

This IS what I was referring to and since I removed mine, I didn't know if it would fit properly leaving it on. So you confirmed that it does not need to be removed

yup, they look pretty sweet polished too, and have 2 pcv ports on the back of them compared to the 1 port of a turbo valve cover. can make your car a little more low profile if kept black if you dont want people to see "turbo" or "shelby" when you pop your hood, most people cant even find the turbo. ive had many people scratch there heads at how fast my car was when they look under the hoods of some of my cars, when they expect it from something that says "shelby" all over it...

Does the hose coming out of intake manifold go to catch can? If so does it have a pcv check valve?
